It would seem that the folks over at Microsoft have been reading the Harry Potter books to get ideas. At the Microsoft Techfest, an annual science fair, a digital wall clock
with hands for each member of the family instead of numbers made its debut. The hands of the clock point to home, school, work and mobile.
The clock won't be for sale anytime soon and was designed to expose employees to projects in development.
On another note, researchers and engineers from the University of Pennsylvania have developed a "plamonic cover
" which is similar to an invisibility cloak also from the Harry Potter series. This version of the cloak works by preventing objects from reflecting and scattering light.
The development, which works by preventing objects from reflecting and scattering light, could have widespread use in the military as it would be more effective than current stealth technology.
I guess reading and watching Philosopher's Stone and Chambers of Secrets helps everyone.

that is awesome,
I wonder how it works, i guess it's activated by sound recognition, if the father says , 'im going to work honey', then the clock's hand will turn to work for dad.
I guess thats the way itll work. it's superb anyway.

I think the clock thing could be an invasion of privacy but the invisability cloak would be really cool if used for the right reasons.

wow! those clocks sound very cool! I would love to have the one where it tells you where all the members of the family are. I think that it is so funny that they are getting these ideas from Harry Potter! I wonder how a clock like that would work...I bet it is really interesting to develop them.

Wow, Potter inspires inventions now? The invisibility cloak is an excellent idea though. I suppose science has always been hindered by the chameleon theory. With this new concept of not reflecting light it is truly unique.

The plamonic cover sound more like some fairy technology in the Artemis Fowl series than Harry's invisibility cloak but the clock was clearly inspired by the HP books. I would have liked more info. Was it actually supposed to track people's whereabouts?

That clock and cloak are pretty cool, wouldn't mind having them but then I wouldn't mind having a few million dollars cause I'll bet the two of them would cost that much. The clock wouldn't be that hard to make, would it? Compared to the cloak, all you'd need is GPS wristwatches and then have it link to your computer so you could highlight areas for work home etc. Just an idea.

Laura_Granger, That's a lot of cut'n'pasting. did you think nobody reads the messages? But I like the onscreen version better too. This one looks like a dish-plate with silver spoons set on it.
