JK Rowling's star wizard will die by the end of her Harry Potter book series, according to a 53% majority of over 15,000 votes cast in HPANA's informal poll. Most fans indicated Harry would sacrifice himself to save loved ones before the end of book seven.
We asked, "Will Harry Potter survive the series and become an adult?"
Here's the rundown as of this story (voting is still open):
41%: No, he'll sacrifice himself to save his loved ones.
29%: Yes, they all live happily ever after.
12%: Yes (for some other reason).
9%: No. If he's not killed, Jo will be hounded to write more.
5%: Yes, though it'll be at St. Mungo's.
2%: No (for some other reason).
The author has playfully hinted -- more than once -- at her leading character's unsure future (at least as far as fans are concerned; Rowling herself knows exactly how the series will end, having already written the final chapter).
We can only wonder if Jo voted in the poll, sometime between taking care of her newborn daughter and sealing up plans for the release of her highly anticipated sixth novel, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. (I just hope he's not whacked by evil French Deatheather Guillaume de Broggy in a deadly duel.)
UPDATE: The Sun (UK newspaper) mentioned this poll in an article

I don't want Harry to die in the 7th book! That would be so sad! I would plunge into depression for the rest of my life. Well, maybe it won't be THAT extreme, but if he does die, I do believe it will be to save someone else.

In some ways I hope he does die (heroically,of course) because I want the story to end neatly at book 7...I really don't want to read about a middle aged, pot bellied, disgruntled Harry Potter at a job he hates with ulcers and...child support payments.

Wow! Those are some interesting results. I think they're pretty close. I can't wait to find out what happens. After the Half Blood Prince there is only one more book left. Wow! time flies.

I've always thought that Harry will die at the end of the series to save everyone else. Its the only way that Voldemort can die.

Haha, my boyfriend and I have spent hours discussing this one! Personally, I'm not quite sure whether or not I think Harry will die at the end... I feel as though if he does live, he'll be doomed to live a sort of unhappy and secluded existence. I mean, we saw what happened after he faced Voldemort in book four, and his relationship with Ron and Hermione still isn't the same. How could he survive such an encounter and return to his normal life? I hope otherwise, but who knows...
Another debating point that's been particularly heated :) is that of whether Dumbledore will snuff it in HBP... my boyfriend is convinced that Harry will have to go it alone in Book 7, but I'm not so sure.
By the way, I'm new to the site, and really loving it!

I really don't want to think about the end all i want to think about is the six book not the seventh. The seventh book means the end and that's depressing.

That's interesting, we'll have to see if popular opinion is correct or not. The great thing about JK is that her stories hold to the classical model while being pretty unpredictable.

hi, first time posting here. I just wanted to point out 2 things: first of all I though JK started out the series (for herself) by writing the last chapter of book 7. This means she must have written it back in 96 or something (correct me if I'm wrong, not that sure about the dates). This alse means she had written it before Harry and the books became a global hype. Thus, I don't believe she would have him die in order not to be presured by fans to write more books about him. However good a writer she is and believed herself to be at that time, even she couldn't have forseen the scale of succes the books would have in the future. So when writing the ending to the series, pressure from fans for future stories wasn't an issue in her mind yet (I think) and therefor did not influence the content of the ending (harry living or dying)
On top of that, I think an other appropriate question is: Will Voldemort survive? I think (and suppose most people think) not. Having the prophecy in mind, does this mean Harry has to survive in order for Voldemort to die? It definately means Harry has to survive Voldemort (because he has to kill him). This of course does not mean Harry will survive the whole series, but I think it notches up his chanches of coming out alive (though not unharmed)
On a side not: it just doesn't feel right if he dies (and this is totally not a logic or rational argument, I am aware of that :-)
so: harry does not die (let's hope)
take care

i had a feeling Harry would die, even though no-one wants hom to. In a way, it makes an affective way to end the book series, because JK would be hounded to write more, as it says.

Ok, before anyone else hits the panic button. I seem to remember a Q&A that Jo had with some first and second grade students and was asked point blank by a little boy if Harry was going to die and she said no. I can see Harry becoming a teacher later in his life and teaching DADA at Hogwarts and eventually becoming Headmaster.
That's my take on it anyway.

I beleive that no matter how it happens, Harry will die. We all know that JK would never have a moments peace if she ended book 7 with "harry lived happily ever after till the end of his days". It would drive us all mad wondering what happened to him, how his life turned out, if he got married, his career and all that stuff. It will be sooo sad and I am sure most of us will cry but I am sure it will happen.

Does anyone here think that maybe Voldemort and Harry will die? Maybe Voldemort will send out such a powerful blast (or Harry) that it will kill them both? The prophecy never said anything to contradict that... At least Voldemort would be dead...
