Will Harry Potter live or die? Popular (124850)

Source: HPANA

JK Rowling's star wizard will die by the end of her Harry Potter book series, according to a 53% majority of over 15,000 votes cast in HPANA's informal poll. Most fans indicated Harry would sacrifice himself to save loved ones before the end of book seven.

We asked, "Will Harry Potter survive the series and become an adult?"

Here's the rundown as of this story (voting is still open):

41%: No, he'll sacrifice himself to save his loved ones.

29%: Yes, they all live happily ever after.

12%: Yes (for some other reason).

9%: No. If he's not killed, Jo will be hounded to write more.

5%: Yes, though it'll be at St. Mungo's.

2%: No (for some other reason).

The author has playfully hinted -- more than once -- at her leading character's unsure future (at least as far as fans are concerned; Rowling herself knows exactly how the series will end, having already written the final chapter).

We can only wonder if Jo voted in the poll, sometime between taking care of her newborn daughter and sealing up plans for the release of her highly anticipated sixth novel, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. (I just hope he's not whacked by evil French Deatheather Guillaume de Broggy in a deadly duel.)

UPDATE: The Sun (UK newspaper) mentioned this poll in an articleopens in new window!

I personally think Harry is going to die or get really, really injured.Like so injured there are scars all over his body. Not like i like pain but Harry and characters have a long road ahead of them and its not going to be easy

Although I definitely don't want HP to die in Book 7, I've always thought that JK might sacrifice him to save someone else. I think a true hero is someone who would give up their life for someone else's. And I think Harry doing this might just make him one of the greatest heroes of all time.

Whether Harry lives or dies, Jo is going to hear about it. When a popular character dies, the author gets an awful lot of mail to bring that character back. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle brought Sherlock Holmes back after the fans spent years hounding him.

1. For his loved ones or
2. Something else!
I'm not very happy with that, but we'll wait and see!

I was quite shocked at the poll data! I can't belive that so many people think that Harry will die at the end of the series! I personally do not think that Harry will die - his whole life is based on him being a survivor, I don't see why that theme wouldn't continue. Anything could happen just as Jo said...I don't think we'll be any closer to knowing at the end of HBP!

I think Jo will kill off Harry Potter in book 7. I also think Harry will take Voldemort down with him. Hermione will turn to Ron in her misery, but it won't last. She'll end up with Neville, who will have finally reached his full potential and gotten out of his awkward adolescence.

I want Harry Potter to kill Voldemort for good and sweep Hermione into his arms, declaring that he wants her by his side, even after the series ends, and that the three friends become Aurors together. Ron can get with some other girl. I dunno, Lavender or something.

Unfortunately, Jo and I have never actually met, and my reccomendations are not likely to influence her, considering she's actually finished writing the last chapter of the last book.

So, to recap:
I don't want Harry to die, but I think he will.
(sigh)
I'll just have to wait with everyone else...

I voted that would all live happily ever after. This is what I want to happen. I do have to admit I am a little concerned since JK is so adamant that there will not be any more books after his studies at Hogwarts, that he might die and that is what makes future books out of the question.

I think he dies.
He dies killing He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.
I never said that I liked it, but that is what I think will happen.
JKR said that at the end of book seven, no more books would be needed because everything will be explained.
If Harry lives, people would want to know who he marries, what he does for the rest of his life, ect...
That wouldn't be much closure, not would it?
That's why I think he dies.
There is no way that more books would ever be written about him then, so that is what I believe.

Jo is definitely an author who I think challenges status quo on the typical story... I wouldn't put it past her to horrifically surprise us, on the other hand, I think we all could use something a little hopeful in the world. I'd hate to see Harry's demise.

There is a difference between Harry surviving and all of them living happily ever after! Just as Sirius died, others might die (like Dumbledore). This means that the toll for saving the world and surviving might become very high for Harry (and Ron and Hermione). It might be a victory, but a sad one because they lost so many good people. When LV disappeard after trying to kill Harry, everybody was happy because he had gone. This did not mean they all lived happily ever after. The one who sacrifised their lives were mourned and remembered. I think it will be the same after this war.
