Will Harry Potter live or die? Popular (124850)

Source: HPANA

JK Rowling's star wizard will die by the end of her Harry Potter book series, according to a 53% majority of over 15,000 votes cast in HPANA's informal poll. Most fans indicated Harry would sacrifice himself to save loved ones before the end of book seven.

We asked, "Will Harry Potter survive the series and become an adult?"

Here's the rundown as of this story (voting is still open):

41%: No, he'll sacrifice himself to save his loved ones.

29%: Yes, they all live happily ever after.

12%: Yes (for some other reason).

9%: No. If he's not killed, Jo will be hounded to write more.

5%: Yes, though it'll be at St. Mungo's.

2%: No (for some other reason).

The author has playfully hinted -- more than once -- at her leading character's unsure future (at least as far as fans are concerned; Rowling herself knows exactly how the series will end, having already written the final chapter).

We can only wonder if Jo voted in the poll, sometime between taking care of her newborn daughter and sealing up plans for the release of her highly anticipated sixth novel, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. (I just hope he's not whacked by evil French Deatheather Guillaume de Broggy in a deadly duel.)

UPDATE: The Sun (UK newspaper) mentioned this poll in an articleopens in new window!

PhantomFingers says:

I hope he doesn't die, but I hope Voldemort dies.

If Jo does write that he dies then it must be for a reason, and she's never let us down before.

Come on book 6!

Oh, my GOD, Karma84! I got a similar message in writing a previous post, so my message was posted twice.

Anyway, in thinking about whether or not Harry will live or die, it makes sense to think about Lord Voldemort. Because of the prophecy in the OoP, we know that Harry and Voldemort can't coexist for too long. One must die. So if we assume that Harry is the one who is going to die, then we're assuming that evil will triumph over good, and that doesn't sound right, does it? Especially in a book series that a lot of kids are reading! I don't think JK is much going to care about "feeling pressured" to write an eighth book or ninth book to justify Harry having lived...good is supposed to triumph over evil, and that's why Harry has to live. I think Harry might get seriously injured and almost lose his life (like in the Chamber of Secrets but to the eleventh power), but eventually he has to kill Voldemort. He has to avenge the death of his parents. It just doesn't make sense that Harry would die at the end. I mean, he's faced Voldemort so many times, and has gotten away each time...it makes sense that the final time he faces him, he kills him.

I don't know, sacrificing himself is in Harrys nature--- look how quickly he rushed to save Sirius, (I'm still upset that he "died") but at the same time I would like to see Harry grow up because he deserves to be happy. And everyone that is, or was, family and extremely close to him has died to protect him.

As much as I do not want to say it just because I want Harry to live and get to experience life, he will probably die. I really hate admiting that to myself because it is just a really sad thought.

I just don't feel like Harry can live after the series end, I wish that I could convince myself otherwise. I feel like after all its been built up to that having Harry continue living would be the typical end to a fantasy book. This is what happens in all of the others that I read at least, and I feel like Rowling will not make everyone happy by letting Harry live.

I agree with you, Katsirimus. Sacrifice is in Harry's nature. But that does't mean that he dies by self-sacrifice. He could get injured to the point of near-death due to self-sacrifice, but he doesn't have to die. I know Rowling said that by the seventh book there would be closure, and we wouldn't need to know anymore, but that doesn't necessarily add up to Harry dying, either. Book seven would just clear up any questions we might have...we don't really need to know who Harry marries and all of that...

It would really be a shame if Harry dies after he lost his family to "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named"...

If Jo doesnt kill him she will be haunted by all the HP fans all over the world to write more books, and yet Voldy will run free to take over the wizzarding world and kill everyone.
If Jo lets him live- the haunting begins and Harry lives and then what? he becomes a "wizzarding celebrity" and lives his whole life in the spotlight..

.. i think we will just have to wait

Jo can't kill Harry, he just can't! I know that it might happen, but is seriously think that I will be heart broken! But there is a chance that he might live to become a defense against the dark arts teacher, or a unmentionable. He was really interested in that. I don't actually think that he will end up at Mungo's though, or at least I hope and wish he doesn't, that to me would be worse than him dieing. Well, all we can do is hope and wish that he doesn't die, but we wont't find out until the seventh book, right? I don't care, I think that they will all end up happily ever after, including Longbottem's parnets (they will have a miracle).

Lea says:

As I've said before, I'm one of those 29% who voted for "they all live happily ever after", because that is what I WANT! -but....it's not exactly what I believe....
...I'll try to explain myself:
I really think Harry WILL LIVE, because I simply CAN'T BELIEVE that J.K.R would let HIM (her Hero) DIE!!! But nevertheless, I don't think he will just "live happily ever after", either!... -because then Jo would be indeed hounded to write more, as we would be hounded (by our own minds) to read more!!...
So, here's what I believe (and I'm AFRAID it will happen!!): NOT the "waking up from a dream" thing, NO WAY, the "Wizard of Oz" pattern couldn't work for seven years at Hogwarts and JKR would never be so clumsy, .....but something ELSE that will just ERASE THE WHOLE STORY, at least FOR HARRY if not for the whole wizarding world!!! --Something like this: Voldemort's defeat will somehow TURN BACK THE TIME to that day when he first tried to kill Harry, but failed and instead marked him as his equal with the scar... And this time he will DIE for good (for real, I mean!) and Harry will survive WITHOUT any SCAR, and EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED IN THE LAST 17 YEARS WILL JUST BE "CANCELED"!!! And Harry will grow up as an "ordinary" wizard-kid, with the Dursleys or even with his mom and dad (maybe time will be reversed to a point right before the moment when they got killed and they won't die anymore!) ...and we'll know that at the age of eleven he'll go to Hogwarts and meet Ron and Hermione... only THIS WON'T MATTER ANYMORE, because he'll be just an ORDINARY young wizard like all the others and NOTHIG SPECIAL WILL HAPPEN TO (WITH) HIM!!.... -Well, something like this. And I will HATE IT, but I'm afraid this is gonna be the big end.

Now, please excuse my bad English.
