JK Rowling's star wizard will die by the end of her Harry Potter book series, according to a 53% majority of over 15,000 votes cast in HPANA's informal poll. Most fans indicated Harry would sacrifice himself to save loved ones before the end of book seven.
We asked, "Will Harry Potter survive the series and become an adult?"
Here's the rundown as of this story (voting is still open):
41%: No, he'll sacrifice himself to save his loved ones.
29%: Yes, they all live happily ever after.
12%: Yes (for some other reason).
9%: No. If he's not killed, Jo will be hounded to write more.
5%: Yes, though it'll be at St. Mungo's.
2%: No (for some other reason).
The author has playfully hinted -- more than once -- at her leading character's unsure future (at least as far as fans are concerned; Rowling herself knows exactly how the series will end, having already written the final chapter).
We can only wonder if Jo voted in the poll, sometime between taking care of her newborn daughter and sealing up plans for the release of her highly anticipated sixth novel, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. (I just hope he's not whacked by evil French Deatheather Guillaume de Broggy in a deadly duel.)
UPDATE: The Sun (UK newspaper) mentioned this poll in an article

Wow! Quite the interesting survey, I hope that most people are incorrect, but somehow, I doubt it! I'm pretty sure everyone is close!

Instead of a follow-up book about Harry, like Geri suggested, I would love to see a book about the Marauders, and their time at Hogwarts... maybe their last year or something like that. I think that would be an awesome follow up to the HP series... not that Jo is ever going to need to work again after this. ;)

I hope he doesn't die, but wow, what a way to end a beautiful series that would be! It would be much more satisfying for me, personally, if he lived and became an auror like he wants to be. I guess we will just have to find out.

I hope, as much as everyone else that Harry will live but i have this feeling that he wont. I voted that he would give his life for his loved ones. I hope that he will live and he and Hermione will get together, but i guess we will have to wait until the seventh book comes out. Cant wait!

I just can't bring myself to imagine that Harry dies. I choose to hope that he will survive. What's wrong with happy endings? I would also hope that JKR would rethink her position, even if it takes several years, and write more about Harry as an adult. Anything is possible.

I voted for the one that says he will sacrifice himself to save his loved ones. That's just the kind of person he is. I hope he won't need to do that though. =[

Anything is possible with J.K. Rowling but it's hard for me to believe that she would write all these books just to have the hero die in the end. I myslef would probably be left bawling (pathetic I know) if Harry dies. I honestly hope she takes the "happily ever after road" but that's just me. I know more will die but it would be heartbreaking if it was one of the trio. Unfortunatley all we can do is wait and see.

I personally think he will live just because i don't want him to die. I think JKR might have seen it and be laughing at our opinions or something. Anyway i can't believe the last chapter is written, it would have to be really secure so no one steals it.

Seems to me all signs are pointing that he will die. I can't severely critize from some people just after completing the 5th book when i said Harry was going to die. It looks like i was with the majority all along.

What if she just left it open? What if we never figured out if he died or not? I think that would be amazing. It would pain us so much, but we would be left, wondering untill our deathbeds, whether Harry Potter survived to be a full grown wizard....

I've always thought that Harry would die to save his friends, and it's kind of reaffirming to see that so many people agree with that theory. I really don't want Harry to die, but I think that that would be the most sensible way to end the books without having to write further sequels. Also, based on the strong connection between Harry and Voldemort, I think that it makes sense that for one to die the other must die, too (kind of like the shared heart in "Dragonheart"). At least that is what I based my belief on. ;-)

I may have voted that Harry dies for a loved one, but I really don't want that to happen. I voted that way because simply of the kind of person he is. He would do anything for his loved ones. We saw it with Sirius. He wanted to go and save him, but was held back. If he could, he would go straight after him. So, that's why I voted that way. Hope it doesn't come true though. He deserves a better life, a happy ending. It's totally up in the air with Jo, who knows what she has in store for us.

I think it's pretty hard to poll out the seven-years-in the making ending of HP...who knows how close or...most likely... how off any of these choices are.
Now that I've said that...watch harry will go to St.Mungo's Die there saving loved ones and then just because it's like that, they will live happily ever after and J.K. will write loads more.
Oh Bother.

I think everyone is close. I think Harry will have to sacrafise himself in the end and that in it's self is the "Love" power that will defeat the dark lord. Just like Lilly sacraficed herself to save Harry. Harry will sacrafice himself for all of wizard kind. The power the dark lord knows not! Sacrification for love of others. And I also believe that DD will be the one to die at the end of the 6th book because that will be the fuel Harry needs to kill LV.
