JK Rowling's star wizard will die by the end of her Harry Potter book series, according to a 53% majority of over 15,000 votes cast in HPANA's informal poll. Most fans indicated Harry would sacrifice himself to save loved ones before the end of book seven.
We asked, "Will Harry Potter survive the series and become an adult?"
Here's the rundown as of this story (voting is still open):
41%: No, he'll sacrifice himself to save his loved ones.
29%: Yes, they all live happily ever after.
12%: Yes (for some other reason).
9%: No. If he's not killed, Jo will be hounded to write more.
5%: Yes, though it'll be at St. Mungo's.
2%: No (for some other reason).
The author has playfully hinted -- more than once -- at her leading character's unsure future (at least as far as fans are concerned; Rowling herself knows exactly how the series will end, having already written the final chapter).
We can only wonder if Jo voted in the poll, sometime between taking care of her newborn daughter and sealing up plans for the release of her highly anticipated sixth novel, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. (I just hope he's not whacked by evil French Deatheather Guillaume de Broggy in a deadly duel.)
UPDATE: The Sun (UK newspaper) mentioned this poll in an article

I really don't want Harry to die at the end of the series(I know that none of us do! hehe), but I think that he might die to save his loved ones, because that is just how Harry is.
on another note...I didn't know that J.K. Rowlings has already written the last chapter of the series...It makes sense though. I would do anything to be able to read that last chapter!! hehe.

Harry die? It's unthinkable. That would make the Dursleys far too happy, and we can't have that now, can we?

I think that JK Rowling said in an interview somewhere that she was not going to kill Harry and that he was going to survive? Did anyone else catch that interview??

I think that because the fates of Harry and VOldemort are entwined, that Harry will have to die, so that Voldemort cannot return again.

I really hope harry doesn't die. Ron I can see dying as a last act of faith to his best friend to show that Ron doesn't always resent Harry, but I don't want Harry to die. Even if it means that Voldemort survives, don't let harry die.

Basically,I don't think that Harry will die in HBP because I think that heroes mostly survive and without him the Harry Potter series (if continued) would be as dry as anything.I really do hope that Harry, Ron and Hermione live!

I'm having mixed emotions about this particular topic. The thought of him acctualy dying is...... well, it's not a good one. I, of course don't, in any way, want him to die, i just don't see any way around it. It could be wishful thinking but mabey he'll die and then somehow come back to life... or something of that nature??!? Mabey? I guess i'll just have to wait and see. grrrr!

I hope he does not die. I really dont Jo would do that to us. Who knows though? She could. Maybe she is just trying to break the tradition of the main character never dying. I do bet that if he does die she will be getting tons of hate mail. Most people just love him too much.

NO! NO! NO!!!! Harry can't die! He just CAN"T! First of all, if he dies, the Voldemort lives, and we KNOW that Jo Rowling isn't cruel enough to make that happen! Remeber what the prophesy said- Harry and Voldemort can't both live, one of them needs to die! And Harry isn't going to be that person! However- he is the kind of person that would sacrifice himself to save others, but he's NOT going to die! I'm sure of it! hahaha! Seriously though, i really don't think that Jo would be able to kill Harry! I don't think she could bring herself to do that... *sigh* but only she knows what's going to happen...

Well, personally i am not a fan of Harry Potter but i would not like him to die as there will be not story if he dies. And i would want this book to continue until he comes out of Hogwarts. Whatever it is, I would like to express my thanks to J.K that she had done a good job with the books. I love the series so much and love the movies too. Maybe J.K has read the poll and decided to change the ending? Well there are always surprises stored for us and J.K might just want to change the ending or even Harry is not even going to die. Hope its the latter. Well, anyway, DRACO RULES!!

Rasial says:
JKR will be hounded to write more HP regardless of whether he lives or dies. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes in an attempt to escape pressure to write more stories featuring the character but eventually resurrected him when the pressure from fans only increased as a result. Something similar occurred with the Star Trek character Spock after he was killed off in the first movie. There are numerous other examples. I think JKR would realise this and if she kills Harry it will be because she feels the story demands it.
That being said, I don't believe she will kill Harry. Although the books are written in third person they are very much from Harry's point of view and I have never yet read a book the has successfully killed of the character from whose point of view the story is told. Is JKR going to finish the series with "and then he died"? Will readers be expected to think that good conquered evil if the hero dies?
I think the prophecy indicates that Harry will either destroy Voldemort or die in the attempt. Not both.

I totally agree with Rasial, I think that J.K cannot kill off HArry and expected the book to end in this way. If HArry was to die, the book would not have any continuation and people will start to think that the bad conquers the good. she could just kill off Voldemot and let Harry live happily ever after which is the best unless some sadistic people wishes for him to die. If Harry really dies, its going to spoil a few people mood and likeness for the book thats all i can say, so please Ms JKR, don't kill Harry and Most importantly, don't kill Draco too. Haha, just joking. I guess I think of him too much after the movies. Thanks.
