Will Harry Potter live or die? Popular (124850)

JK Rowling's star wizard will die by the end of her Harry Potter book series, according to a 53% majority of over 15,000 votes cast in HPANA's informal poll. Most fans indicated Harry would sacrifice himself to save loved ones before the end of book seven.

We asked, "Will Harry Potter survive the series and become an adult?"

Here's the rundown as of this story (voting is still open):

41%: No, he'll sacrifice himself to save his loved ones.

29%: Yes, they all live happily ever after.

12%: Yes (for some other reason).

9%: No. If he's not killed, Jo will be hounded to write more.

5%: Yes, though it'll be at St. Mungo's.

2%: No (for some other reason).

The author has playfully hinted -- more than once -- at her leading character's unsure future (at least as far as fans are concerned; Rowling herself knows exactly how the series will end, having already written the final chapter).

We can only wonder if Jo voted in the poll, sometime between taking care of her newborn daughter and sealing up plans for the release of her highly anticipated sixth novel, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. (I just hope he's not whacked by evil French Deatheather Guillaume de Broggy in a deadly duel.)

UPDATE: The Sun (UK newspaper) mentioned this poll in an articleopens in new window!

I've long had a sneaky suspicion that Harry will have to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to save the Magical World from "V". But that is not to say that he (or we) wouldn't be rewarded for it in some way. Fawkes healed him before... who's to say that he couldn't be brought back to life? However, niether one of them can truly live while the other survives. So for Harry to really live, "V" must not survive. Harry will have to do away with "V", but at what cost? Now that "V" has Harry's blood in him, would Harry's death bring about his? Will the Phoenix raise Harry after the deed is done? mmmmmm.....

I absolutely hope Harry does not die. It would be just dreadful. And imagine going back to the first books and thinking, "Oh. Harry's still alive here and he doesn't know he's going to die!" Inmho, a cliffhanger ending is better than a sad ending: 'tis not good, but it's better.

I think Harry will die at the end only by saving someone elses life. If he does live, J.K. would be writing books forever until he does die. It would have to be in the 7th movie because there are 7 years at Hogwarts. Its too soon to wonder about this.

Oh no....

I really do not want Harry to die. I mean, he's soo talented and good-natured and he deserves a long and happy life. Right?

Maybe he'll drift off into some kind of rest and be happy with Sirius (if he's really dead) and not live happily ever after, but be somewhere peaceful and calm forver where he can ride his Firebolt whenever he wants.

Or maybe if he lives, he'll get Order of Merlin, 1st Class and become the world's best ever Auror.

There are soo many possibilities!! I can't wait to read the seventh book! (and the sixth...duh)

As much as I don't want Harry to die, I think he probably will. Otherwise, JRK will be hounded endlessly about writing more novels. I'm sure that if he does die it will be really heroic, like dying yet killing LV in the process or saving someone or something like that. Maybe I'll have a better idea about it after reading the 6th book.

granddaughter of Anael says:

I do not think these are the only options. They started to mess with time, so it is rather possible, that Harry will return to the past and will kill Waldemont, as adult, not as a baby. Then by some way he will become the baby again, and will grow up to clean Woldemont's mess. So it may be just a sort of temporal loop. While other characters act and live in linear time, Harry is in a permanent temporal circle. Then, after the last book you can start to read the first book again, and so without end.

I think that harry will end up dying for hermione and ron, because those are the two most beloved in his heart, and he would surely die to spare their lives.

I have no idea what's going to happen to him... I've been reading HP since 1998, and I keep going back and forth. Either way though, I'm really excited to read the rest of the series! It'll be kind of sad when it's done though.

I think Harry will live...I mean imagine how depressed people would get across the world if he died...but then JKR was never one to change her story to make people happy was she? Otherwise Padfoot would still be with us.

I think that Harry will die(TEAR). There is a link between him and Lord Voldemort. I think as long as Harry is alive Voldemort can return somehow, and I think he will figure this out. Only JK really knows!!

I think that Neville will die, but I don't think that Harry, Ron or Hermione will die. If they do I'll start crying my eyes out like I did in the end of OotP. Jo wrote the final chapter before she knew how popular the books would become, so I don't think she'll kill Harry so that people won't want her to write an other book.

Oh that would be so sad if Harry dies at the end. I think that it suits the story better though, since its dark and not very happy. I can't really see JKR doing a "and they lived happily ever after" endings. I think that the story would just work better if Harry would die. And I think he will sacrifice himself to save someone he cares for, but that's what a lot of people think also. :)

(hopefully)!!
