JK Rowling's star wizard will die by the end of her Harry Potter book series, according to a 53% majority of over 15,000 votes cast in HPANA's informal poll. Most fans indicated Harry would sacrifice himself to save loved ones before the end of book seven.
We asked, "Will Harry Potter survive the series and become an adult?"
Here's the rundown as of this story (voting is still open):
41%: No, he'll sacrifice himself to save his loved ones.
29%: Yes, they all live happily ever after.
12%: Yes (for some other reason).
9%: No. If he's not killed, Jo will be hounded to write more.
5%: Yes, though it'll be at St. Mungo's.
2%: No (for some other reason).
The author has playfully hinted -- more than once -- at her leading character's unsure future (at least as far as fans are concerned; Rowling herself knows exactly how the series will end, having already written the final chapter).
We can only wonder if Jo voted in the poll, sometime between taking care of her newborn daughter and sealing up plans for the release of her highly anticipated sixth novel, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. (I just hope he's not whacked by evil French Deatheather Guillaume de Broggy in a deadly duel.)
UPDATE: The Sun (UK newspaper) mentioned this poll in an article

I think a lot of people will be completly heartbroken if Harry dies, because so many people have fallen in love with the character. He's a wonderful spirit. But if thats the way it has to be I think JK knows what shes doing, and she wouldnt do it if she didnt have a logical reason to. It's doesnt make a difference to me whether Harry Lives or dies, as long as the story fits and makes sence. I love it all just the same.

I think that Harry will die, but that we will see him after his death. Maybe with him and his parents being reunited.

Wish I could have voted there. Ooh, I hope he certainly doesn't die. It just seems as though he should live out a Beckham-like existence on a World cup Championship Quidditch team!!!

I really don't think he'll die. In the long run he is a good guy and although he is good natured and would sacrifice himself for others, there are those around him who will not let bad things hapen to him! He is a lot stronger than his other friends too, but i don't think any of them are going to die.

I really hope Harry lives and JKR can write a couple more books, I love the books SOOOOOOOOOOO much, I would be majorly bummed out if there weren't anymore books and Harry dies just because JKR wouldn't want to write more books even though I understand that she's human too and doesn't want to be hounded for the rest of her life. I also don't think it would fit the storyline, so far Harry's skived out of everything. Anyway, keep the comments coming!

No, I don't think he will die...it goes against the prophecy. If you read it carefully you will see that it says..."one must die"...if Harry dies then Voldemort wins...but it is possible that both may die,...but that doesn't go if with the prophecy. You must read it carefully.

Harry cannot die! Reading the prophecy, and with Harry practically spelling it out for us, it's obvious that one of them have got to kill the other in the end. This means one must live, and if Harry dies that means Voldemort has won. If Voldemort won, I shudder to think of what crazed fans would do to poor J.K Rowling.

I think Harry will definetly die for a number of reasons. First of all if he doesn't Jo will be haunted by fans for the rest of her life to write more. Secondly, I think he will sacrifice himself, because, well, that's what he is like. Also I think Voldemort and Harry will just kill each other so that the world can be normal again. But we won't know for sure till book 7, and Jo has been known of doing unexpected things...

but why doesn't JK just write another book on how harry's life is for 5 or 10 years? then she could stop there. OR maybe JK could skip to the very far future and tell us how's harry's life after (if he lives) Hogwarts: house, friends (hermione, ron, cho, fleur, victor, marriage(?), (if he gets married) harry's children.

I think that Harry Potter will stay alive, and J.K.Rowling will write more books about his adult life. I would buy them, and I'm sure a lot of other people would too!

I'm torn in my opinions as to whether Harry will live or die, but the character I'm sure is for the chop is Severus Snape. I'm convinced he's going to die saving someone (Harry perhaps) to cancel the debt he has to James for saving Snape's life in the Remus Lupin incident. Harry will finally be convinced that Severus Snape, while not nice, was not evil either.
Just my two cents.

I have to say that i think he will die. If Voldemort (oops sorry)... He who must not be named. Will die or not.
Id like to think The Dark Lord will die (but because good always wins i am guessin he will), unless JK decides to go against the way it is always done.

MWeasley says:
No,no! I refuse to believe that Harry will die. For one, Joe says on her website that she doesn't plan to write more, but she also says "Never say never". How could she even contemplate writing more if she kills Harry?? Second, Voldemort is afraid of death. That's why he tried to make himself immortal the first time around. That's why, in his latest duel with Dumbledore, he says there is nothing worse than death. I think he has to die - and will become a ghost. I don't think they'll all live happily ever after - I think Ron will die in the end, sacrificing himself for Harry the way he did in PS during the game of wizard's chess. I think Dumbledore will die, because there's no other way Harry will be able to face Voldemort on his own. But I firmly believe Harry will triumph in the end. Sorry, I refuse to believe it will end any other way. ;)
