JK Rowling's star wizard will die by the end of her Harry Potter book series, according to a 53% majority of over 15,000 votes cast in HPANA's informal poll. Most fans indicated Harry would sacrifice himself to save loved ones before the end of book seven.
We asked, "Will Harry Potter survive the series and become an adult?"
Here's the rundown as of this story (voting is still open):
41%: No, he'll sacrifice himself to save his loved ones.
29%: Yes, they all live happily ever after.
12%: Yes (for some other reason).
9%: No. If he's not killed, Jo will be hounded to write more.
5%: Yes, though it'll be at St. Mungo's.
2%: No (for some other reason).
The author has playfully hinted -- more than once -- at her leading character's unsure future (at least as far as fans are concerned; Rowling herself knows exactly how the series will end, having already written the final chapter).
We can only wonder if Jo voted in the poll, sometime between taking care of her newborn daughter and sealing up plans for the release of her highly anticipated sixth novel, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. (I just hope he's not whacked by evil French Deatheather Guillaume de Broggy in a deadly duel.)
UPDATE: The Sun (UK newspaper) mentioned this poll in an article

Maybe ya'll haven't read HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, but im the prophecy it states that, in the end -whenever that may be, between Harry and Voldemort, one will die and the other will rise triumphant. If harry dies, voldemort wins. I'm not sayin who'll do what, but think about that next time you predict his death.

I think in a lot of ways that Harry will die. But there is that sticky little point of the prophecy, neither can live while the other survives. Theoretically if Jo kills off Harry, Voldemort will live on. As dark as things have gotten in some of the books, I really don't think she will leave us hanging on the Voldemort issue. If she allows Voldemort to live and Harry to die, there is always the possibility that Voldemort will return and I think just as many fans would hound her to write more about that, just as they will hound her to write more if Harry survives.

I am content to let Jo write the books without my opinion.
She has done very well so far. Think of Sir Arthur Conan Dole
and Sherlock Holmes. He tried to kill the character twice.
I will enjoy stories about Harry's world even if Jo does not write them. She has shown how to do complex and interesting
stories. I will learn from what happens to Harry and his world.

The story so far has Harry getting stronger and stronger in an effort to be able to stand up to Voldermort . His being good is in contrast to Voldermort being bad.
If these two battle each other they may combine in a dual like the one they had in Goblet where nobody can touch them. I'd like to have more of the Potter world. I will enjoy reading all of HP for many years. I reread all the books before there is a new one to come out or even a new movie. Each read is different because I see different things each time.

I really hope Harry lives -- it would be so sad if he dies!:-( I think he'll live, but maybe not completely 'happly ever after'. That would be to perfect, and the world of Harry Potter is not perfect!

I don't think J.K.Rowling would kill Harry--she's probably really attached to her characters. I'll be really sad when the series is over too. I really wish Harry would get held back or something so there'd be another book after #7. Maybe if he decides to be an aurour she'll write a book about that--but I know it's not likely!

Well, I have very strong hopes that he will NOT die!! I'll be thoroughly upset -- not that that matters in the scheme of the books. I was very upset when Sirius died -- or is he dead? I don't think I'd better go there.

I've heard that when she first wrote the plot for the Harry Potter series she killed Harry in the end. I heard that from a very good writing teacher of mine when he explained plots and story lines to us. And when it first came out that was the roumor I heard. I voted taht he would die to save everyone. But if he dies, Voldy lives. I can't quite decide. JK Rowling is smart. I guess I just have to wait until the next book.
Moderators-
The last time I wrote about hearing that from my writing teacher you deleted my post for lack of evidence. I hope it doesn't get deleted again.

Here's a reason I think (but don't hope) he will die. J.K. Rowling writes the Harry Potter books in a limited third person point of view that circulates mainly on Harry and his feelings. If she would have done first person than it would have been hard to have Harry die without losing an end resolution. With the limited third person she can still do this. Also she really plays up Harry's "saving people thing" during the story.
On the other hand, I am sure that Rowling is very attached to Harry because he is her own masterpiece so I doubt she would want to see him die. Also, I'm sure she knows that she would put many people across the world into mourning and many people would be very upset.
So really, who knows but her? And then there's the fact that she could change it if she really really really wanted to, but I doubt it. It's fun guessing though.

I think Harry Potter will live. If J.K. Rowling kills him off in her seventh book she won't have anyone to write about later on if she wanted to go back to writing the series.

I think that Harry has to die saving someone and that person would be a close friend. Harry should not be the only one to die.Voldemort should die along with him to end the story.
