JK Rowling's star wizard will die by the end of her Harry Potter book series, according to a 53% majority of over 15,000 votes cast in HPANA's informal poll. Most fans indicated Harry would sacrifice himself to save loved ones before the end of book seven.
We asked, "Will Harry Potter survive the series and become an adult?"
Here's the rundown as of this story (voting is still open):
41%: No, he'll sacrifice himself to save his loved ones.
29%: Yes, they all live happily ever after.
12%: Yes (for some other reason).
9%: No. If he's not killed, Jo will be hounded to write more.
5%: Yes, though it'll be at St. Mungo's.
2%: No (for some other reason).
The author has playfully hinted -- more than once -- at her leading character's unsure future (at least as far as fans are concerned; Rowling herself knows exactly how the series will end, having already written the final chapter).
We can only wonder if Jo voted in the poll, sometime between taking care of her newborn daughter and sealing up plans for the release of her highly anticipated sixth novel, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. (I just hope he's not whacked by evil French Deatheather Guillaume de Broggy in a deadly duel.)

Would JKR kill Harry and then resurrect him? Love is the greatest magic and Harry certainly has surrounded himself with loving and caring people (OoTP, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, the Weasleys, the DA, the Hogwarts Staff, the Griffindor quidditch team, etc). Although he has been picked on throughout the series, those loyal to him are very much so.
There is also the love of Lily. Her sacrifice keeps coming up but I haven't really seen how JKR is going to use it.
Just randomly wandering through thoughts here. Any inputs?

I really hope good triumphs over evil in the end. Kids and adults alike are hoping Harry makes it, it's nice to think that after all the bad stuff that happens in a person's life, it can still end up okay. Talk about pressure on JKR. She knows she's writing for millions or more people and a majority are children so she has to be careful of the message she sends, but she needs to make the story interesting. I guess that's why she writes for herself, so she doesn't have to worry about what everyone else wants.

I am also willing to bet that at least one more main character (McGonagle, Neville, Ron, Hermione, Mr or Mrs Weasley?) will probably fall early in the next book.
I have trouble believing that Harry will die in the last book though because I don't know if JKR would be willing to do that to her fans. She is a Mom and knows that her fans include a lot of kids looking for the positive side of life. Harry has gotten all the bad breaks and made it through still a good person and a loyal friend.
I believe that "love is the strongest magic" will prevail and, even if Harry falls, that the love of those around him will ensure he lives in the end.

I think it's in Harry's nature to sacrifice himself for his friends and loved ones, and I also totally think it's in JKR's nature to totally catch us all completely off guard and write something that will be truly great literature and absolutely something NONE of us will have predicted....I guess we just have to wait and see.
Killing Harry off ultimately makes the most sense, and seems to be what she's hinting at, and also relieves JKR from having to deal with us pestering her to continue on writing Harry's life (should he live).
However, I have just one thing to say- even if you kill him off JKR, I'm really really really hoping you'll consider a series of PREQUELS!! I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to see what happened in the years BEFORE Harry was born, leading up to Voldemort's creation, and the death of harry's parents....just a thought.

No. JKR, you're WAY better than that. I will respect whatever you write, however you end it, even if Harry dies, but don't end it that way.
