JK Rowling's star wizard will die by the end of her Harry Potter book series, according to a 53% majority of over 15,000 votes cast in HPANA's informal poll. Most fans indicated Harry would sacrifice himself to save loved ones before the end of book seven.
We asked, "Will Harry Potter survive the series and become an adult?"
Here's the rundown as of this story (voting is still open):
41%: No, he'll sacrifice himself to save his loved ones.
29%: Yes, they all live happily ever after.
12%: Yes (for some other reason).
9%: No. If he's not killed, Jo will be hounded to write more.
5%: Yes, though it'll be at St. Mungo's.
2%: No (for some other reason).
The author has playfully hinted -- more than once -- at her leading character's unsure future (at least as far as fans are concerned; Rowling herself knows exactly how the series will end, having already written the final chapter).
We can only wonder if Jo voted in the poll, sometime between taking care of her newborn daughter and sealing up plans for the release of her highly anticipated sixth novel, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. (I just hope he's not whacked by evil French Deatheather Guillaume de Broggy in a deadly duel.)
UPDATE: The Sun (UK newspaper) mentioned this poll in an article

For some reason I feel very sure Ron and Hermione will live, I am foggy about whether Harry will die, but I do not think he will just ride into the sunset like anyone else. There will be something dark for his future

Although I want Harry to live (mainly because I would love it if JKR left herself the chance to write more Harry Potter books in the future), I think that I have to say that I see him dying. Not because he wants to, but because he has to. So many people have willingly given up their lives for Harry (his parents, Sirius, Dumbledore) and there are many more (Hermione, the Weasleys minus Percy-although I'm not too sure how he will change in this last book) that he will sacrifice himself if needs be.

As much as I hate to admit it though, if JKR does not kill Harry, think of the public pressure she will be under to write another book?
The fan response has been so fantastic for this character, we are nearly forcing her into killing Harry just so she can move on to other projects in peace.

As many of you say, its possible that he sacrifice himself to save others, but I still hope that he survives, i've read all the books at least three times, seen the movie about 30 times(i've got to much free time)and I dont want the hero that i have read about for years to die.
we will see what Rowling decides to do.

As popular as Harry Potter has become, I think JKR almost MUST kill him in order to get on with her writing career. Can you imagine if Harry lives? Everyone will pester her non-stop to continue with the series. Better for her career to just kill him off in a wild and noble manner and move on to a new challenge.

I can't imagine Harry surviving book seven...Besides that Ms. Rowling would always be hounded to write other books, I think not knowing where Harry's off to next would seem like an incomplete story, like we'd never really have closure, you know? As much as I don't want a tragic ending to the story, I don't know that having Harry ride his broomstick off into the sunset would be the kind of ending we'd truly want from such a great series...

I hope harry does not die, but how cool would it be if wb made a film after the last one about when voldemort was in power, showing the origional order of the phoenix' battles.

Remus Lumpin says:
Harry Potter will not die if you have read the order of the phoenix. Because in the chapter called, The Lost Prophecy it says,
'The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord aproaches. . . . Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies . . . and the dark lord will mark him as equal, but he will have the power the Dark Lord knows not . . . and either must die at the hand of the other for neither ther can live while the other survives. . . . The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies. . . .'

"Neither can live while the other survives."
If you turn it around, if one survives, neither of them can live... to me this means they both have to die.
Now could it also mean that if one survives they aren't going to have much of a life, could that mean that the battle might leave Harry in some kind of coma that "love" could bring him out of?
I have read too many fantasy and sci-fi books. Death isn't real in fiction anymore.

I think that he may sacrifice himself because he doesnt have any more blood familiars and that make him feel more miserable maybe he can consider ron a hermione familiars but I think that he may want to sacrifice himself. And also I think that harry and voldemort are somehow connected and if one die the other also dies.

Ok so I know it is sad to think Harry will die, and I don't want him to, but I guess we can't expect Jo to keep on writing forever and that is what everyone would want if he doesn't die ;(

I'm not quite sure what ought to happen. I know that Voldemort knows Harry's weakness for saving his friends. Voldemort has already used this against him in CoS and OotP. And, how can Harry possibly find the remaining Horcruxes in just one book. For there are four remaining, not counting Voldemort himself of course. Then again, Voldemort things that the worst thing to suffer is self inflicted pain... so that might be a big advantage for our hero. I just hope that Harry lives... and if he doesn't, I do believe we'll all mourn ourselves to death!

I think other major characters are doomed no matter what happens to Harry. I think Tonks or Lupin are going to die just because things just seem to be working out for them, but they are both always right in the thick of the conflict. I am worried for all of the Weasleys too (except for Percy). All of them are always right in the middle of the fight and Arthur, Ron and Bill have each come close to death already.

Guts says:
It may be that Potter was destined to die, stated somewhere in that last paragraph already written since the beggining of the series, it just doesn't seem likely. Reasons:
1) Books for children
2) Modern Fairy Tale
3) Hints in novels that indicate otherwise - at the same time not contridicting what JKR has mentioned of an unsure future for Harry.
Novel constantly assures reader that Harry is well protected from Tom. From the sacrifice, to blood pacts at the begining of the series to the prophecy. While the likelyhood of the prophecy becoming true is questionable (so that concept of free will still in place) - it has not been rejected by Dumbaldore enough to make it any less. This especialy confirmed when Dumbledore assures that Harry has the advantage ("love"). [The arguement can be roughed up a bit though if Dumbledore isn't the all knowing person hes described to be]
However, while Potter is likely to live, his unsure future may come as a result of those arround him dropping dead (relationships in general) or he may be physically afflicted similiar to Moody.

Ahhhh! Sorry for double post - didn't see an edit.
Novel can still stop at 7 even though Potter lives, since stories in general aren't much fun if an Antagonist is missing. Likewise, even if Potter does die, it is possible still through some deus ex machina that he is revived so that JRK can continue making certain fans happy or/and making money off the franchise
