The Britishopens in new window and Americanopens in new window publishers of Harry Potter have posted the jacket covers for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The children's British versions by Jason Cockcroft, shows Harry and Dumbledore in rings of fire and the adult version is from a photograph by Michael Wildsmith showing a tattered book called Advanced Potion-Making.

The Scholastic cover by Mary GrandPré was debuted this morning on NBC's Todayopens in new window show (click for video!). On the American edition, Harry and Dumbledore are looking into what seems to be a pensive.

Click here for all three covers (biggest available online).

Update: Read Raincoast Books' press releaseopens in new window, Scholastic's press releaseopens in new window, and Bloomsbury's press releaseopens in new window. Also, see this photo of artist Mary GrandPré at her studioopens in new window with the book cover on her desk.

This is so cool
It's great that finally the covers are out
I personally prefer the UK version of the books
but i like the American cover better because i thought that the American OotP cover was more related to the story as in it potrayed the Dept. of Mysteries whereas although the UK cover had a phoenix on the phoenix was not as important in that book

Anyway i still like the UK books because of the Brit English used ...I grew up in india where we use Brit English and although i m in U.S now the American English still doesnt seem completely right
and anyway A BRIT book by a BRIT should be read in BRIT i think......

Can someone tell me what the major difference is between the UK adult and childrens versions (like with some example from OotP) and how does the American book come out in one single version

Yay! Finally, the cover! Oh my gosh, you have no idea how long I've waited for the cover, well, maybe you do. But what is that thing Harry and Dumbledore are staring into? It doesn't really look like a pensieve, but it still could be. Oh, I'm just so excited and happy at the same time!

I'm biting my nails over here, I've got fever, my mind is running on 101 paths..................
I think Snape will play a major role in this part....(see the "Advanced potion-making"!!!)..... And...oh, I don't know!!!..... ...But at least one thing seems certain to me: Harry and Dumbleodre will actually (literally) FIGHT against Voldemort TOGETHER, side-by-side!!!

Lily_Evans says:

I wonder what the covers mean? All I can put together is that Harry and Dumbledore will be working together more, and I would guess, by the look on Harry's face, it is very difficult magic too. In the American version and the UK Children's version it has Dumbledore and Harry together, working on an 'extra project' perhaps? You know, the kind of after hours project he and Snape... oops, I mean Professor Snape... worked on in his 5th year.

Great covers! I like the USA version better than the Britsh one. I've always liked GranPre's style, it just seems more Harry Potter.

Another thing I just realized was that the US cover was mainly green. Like Harry's eyes. Like his mother, Lily's, eyes. Are you catching my drift?

Also, after examining, (if you can call it that, all i did was look at the cover and making hunches) the adult cover, I came up with a few theories.
1) Harry made it into the NEWT class with Snape.
2) Harry will be taking potions with Snape even though he didn't pass the NEWTs
3) Snape got DADA position (threw away his potion book)

I wonder if this means that Harry will take potions in his sixth year. McGonnagal did promoise him that she would do whatever it took to get him to be an auror. The pensive could mean a lot of things, but it's deffinately an important clue. At least this means that Harry and Dumbledore are working together again, and Harry has gotten over his anger and Dumbledore.

This news, for me, is absolutely worthy of a heartfelt squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Ok, ok, I like a lot of theories that are floating around based on the covers. First, I agree that the Bloomsbury adult cover probably points to Harry continuing with Potions. I am hoping that he did very well on his O.W.L., not that he somehow gets bullied into the class by Dumbledore. Snape would be much more annoyed by Harry showing ability in the subject than getting more "pet" treatment from Dumbledore. In any case, I look forward to more Harry/Snape sparring!

The Bloomsbury Children's and Scholastic versions seem to be illustrating a resurgance of closeness between Dumbledore and Harry. I especially love the "live-action" Dumbledore on the Bloomsbury -- I would love to see Harry and Dumbledore fighting side-by-side (with confidence this time, Harry!) And the Scholastic one...I do think that's the pensieve again. I love the idea that maybe Harry is learning more about why Dumbledore trusts Snape, but the first thought I had was that Harry will be learning more about his parents.

I'm sure I don't have to say that I am somehow even more excited for July 16th (as if it were possible!) now that I see these amazing covers!

Mary GrandPre was talking about foreshadowing a little bit in her covers- HBP must have something to do with a powerful potion (plus the cover of the adult version would contribute to that). Does anyone else think that the adult cover is somewhat scary? It looks like something dangerous is going on. I'm worried now.
