The British
and American
publishers of Harry Potter have posted the jacket covers for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The children's British versions by Jason Cockcroft, shows Harry and Dumbledore in rings of fire and the adult version is from a photograph by Michael Wildsmith showing a tattered book called Advanced Potion-Making.
The Scholastic cover by Mary GrandPré was debuted this morning on NBC's Today
show (click for video!). On the American edition, Harry and Dumbledore are looking into what seems to be a pensive.
Click here for all three covers (biggest available online).
Update: Read Raincoast Books' press release
, Scholastic's press release
, and Bloomsbury's press release
. Also, see this photo of artist Mary GrandPré at her studio
with the book cover on her desk.

Woah, I really like the Scholastic cover. I wonder if that's really a pensive? It might not be, because that seems sort of obvious. The books have never mentioned a pensive on a pillar, so maybe it's something we haven't seen before. Did anyone else notice that on the children's cover, their wands look like they're melting?
730 pages! I am so excited!

BTW the title of the tattered book in the adult Bloomsbury edition is ADVANCED POTIONS MAKING. What do you suppose that has to do with Harry? Finally learning potions by heart?

It would be so cool if we could see the back covers as well (though i know we won't be able to). The back cover could give us a real insite. However, the antici...pation is nearly the best part. What am i saying?! Reading the book is the best part!!!!

wow, it looks amazing. The green and purple make it look much scarier, and deep. I like how dumbledore is on it too, kind of like he is protecting harry in a way. i like the American version better though.

That's great! It makes it all seem so much more real! I think we can infer from the title of the potions book that Harry did well enough in his potions OWL to be studying it for NEWT, i.e. he's closer to becoming an Auror. Exciting or what?

They look brilliant. The cover usually says so much about the book. Unfortunately we never realize that until we read the book, but I'm so happy they've been released.

Well it appears that Harry will definitely be doing potions judging by what the UK adult cover will be. Not sure about the illustrations though - I think I'll like them better when the book is released.

SiriusFan says:
"Advanced Potion Making" is the title of the book on the adult cover ... hmm ... does this mean Harry is not in fact dropping Potions with Snape, as he mentioned doing in his sixth year? Or could it mean he needs to learn an advanced potion to use in his defense? Or will work closely with Snape to fight Voldemort in book six?
I'm so curious as to what the rings of fire will turn out to be. I love seeing Dumbledore and Harry, side by side - that is inspiring but worries me a little that perhaps predictions of Dumbledore's dying in this book may in fact come to pass.
As far as Scholastics cover I'm sure it'll make perfect sense to us all what the story is about once we're done reading it but for now we'll just have to continue speculating. I know I'm not alone when I say this has only fueled my fire and my excitement for the sixth book is even higher than before.

Although I like all the covers, I think the Bloomsbury adult cover tells the most. At least on the surface. The American versions have a tendency to have a lot of hints on the back cover as well - most of which do not make sense until the book is read. :) What a nice surprise to find first thing in the morning (ok, mid-morning, but who's counting?)
