The publication of the sixth book in JK Rowling's ever-popular Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, will be the all-time-highest initial print run in history, U.S. publisher Scholastic announced
Tuesday.
At 10.8 million copies, that's four million more than the then-record-breaking initial print run for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in 2003.
Barbara Marcus, president of Scholastic Children's Books said:
We know, based on past experience, that readers will want a copy the minute it goes on sale. We wanted to be ready so that every single child, every single person who started out with Harry Potter when it began and every family that wants multiple copies will be able to get them.
USA Today has a chart detailing the initial printing runs for each of the previous books and also the number of Harry Potter books currently in print.
UPDATE: There will also be a huge marketing plan associated with the book which will kick-off in April marking the 100 Day Countdown to Harry. Some of the activities include a multi-tiered national advertising campaign and a first-time ever Harry Potter crossword puzzle in The New York Times.

I think I might pre-order my copy from Amazon so it gets to me the day it's released and I won't have to have my eyes scratched out trying to get one in a bookstore. Can't wait!

That's a whole lot of books. It's hard to imagine that many books and there still being the chance of not being able to get one because the stores sell out. I wonder how much money JKR makes off each individual book. Good for her.

I was wondering when the marketing blitz was going to begin, I figured we were getting close-only 107 days left!!! I wonder how many ways they can find to drive us nuts with anticipation?
As for actually buying the book? I've pre-ordered the deluxe edition on-line because of the sale price and plan to get the trade-edition at the midnight party.

That is a lot of trees they have to cut down to print that many books. I am not complaining but I hope they listened to the petition to use recycled paper.

I am so thrilled to hear that they will have plenty of copies printed. I can't wait for the New York Times crossword of Harry Potter! Hopefully, there will be enough lead time before its release so that fans will be able to purchase copies of the paper on the day it is published.

Wow! What a huge number, but it doesn't surprise me. The books sell out so quickly. Many people buy more than one, so that makes it sell out that much sooner.

10.4 million copies that is a lot of books. But I think that they are right in printing that much. Because when The Order of the Phoenix came out many peole were left without a copy that the book. I can't wait for the book, I hope B&N do the same they did last year.

Wow, an HP crossword in the New YOrk Times is pretty amazing if it's really being done by the paper rather than Scholastic. You'd better post it up here when it comes out so that we can all have a go wherever we live!
