The publication of the sixth book in JK Rowling's ever-popular Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, will be the all-time-highest initial print run in history, U.S. publisher Scholastic announced
Tuesday.
At 10.8 million copies, that's four million more than the then-record-breaking initial print run for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in 2003.
Barbara Marcus, president of Scholastic Children's Books said:
We know, based on past experience, that readers will want a copy the minute it goes on sale. We wanted to be ready so that every single child, every single person who started out with Harry Potter when it began and every family that wants multiple copies will be able to get them.
USA Today has a chart detailing the initial printing runs for each of the previous books and also the number of Harry Potter books currently in print.
UPDATE: There will also be a huge marketing plan associated with the book which will kick-off in April marking the 100 Day Countdown to Harry. Some of the activities include a multi-tiered national advertising campaign and a first-time ever Harry Potter crossword puzzle in The New York Times.

I can't believe they are selling so many books! Oh wait, I can. Harry Potter is the biggest, and best book series in the world. (don't quote me on that!) I just am amazed by those numbers! WOW. 10.8 million. How many zeros is that? 10,000,000 is 10 million, but where does the point 8 go? Oh well.... 5-6 zeros is defiantly a big enough number.

10.4 million copies will definitely be enough for a first run, considering that what, the last first run was 8.something million copies. I am sure they will all sell and JKR will make even more money and there will be more pressure to write the last book and it is going to take a while, and so much anticipation is going to grow and it is going to sell the most copies of any book. I mean that has basically what has happened the entire time, her books have become incesingly popular as younger children get older and finally make the choice to read the Harry Potter books. Just a few more months until HBP is released.

Oh my God. That just made me tingle with excitement. Breaking a record it had already broken before! That is of course a very wise thing to do, but think of all those trees! Then again, I want my copy right when it comes out!
Why oh why can't July 16 be tomorrow and not 107 days away?

Wow, 10.8 million copies will be printed? That is a lot of books. But for everybody to get their own, a lot of books would have to be printed. And to think OotP only had about 6 million copies at the initial print. :)
