The publication of the sixth book in JK Rowling's ever-popular Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, will be the all-time-highest initial print run in history, U.S. publisher Scholastic announced
Tuesday.
At 10.8 million copies, that's four million more than the then-record-breaking initial print run for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in 2003.
Barbara Marcus, president of Scholastic Children's Books said:
We know, based on past experience, that readers will want a copy the minute it goes on sale. We wanted to be ready so that every single child, every single person who started out with Harry Potter when it began and every family that wants multiple copies will be able to get them.
USA Today has a chart detailing the initial printing runs for each of the previous books and also the number of Harry Potter books currently in print.
UPDATE: There will also be a huge marketing plan associated with the book which will kick-off in April marking the 100 Day Countdown to Harry. Some of the activities include a multi-tiered national advertising campaign and a first-time ever Harry Potter crossword puzzle in The New York Times.

I can't wait for all the Harry Potter freaks to turn up at my favorite bookstore. It's going to be so funny, and a laugh to see. I just hope that there is enough books for everyone.

Ooooooooooooooooooh this so soooooo exciting, but you what, the fan base for this genre is getting so unbelievabley big now that i dont think that that number is going to be enough! I just have a sneaky feeling because last time it wasnt enough, it certainly wont be this time.

That's so awesome! I love it when Harry Potter sets records and breaks old ones. I can't wait to begin seeing the marketing for the book go into effect. I can't wait for the book!!

Scholastic can print as many copies of HBP as they want. It does not effect me because I live in Canada and I get the Bloomsbury copy (which I like better).

That is a whole lot of copies. What i do to make sure i get to read it is put on hold at my local library and read than wait until the paperback comes out than get it. That way i always make sure i read it. Im like 4th on the waiting listso and get like 14 copies so im really going to get like extaly when they get it. Anyway i was bored so i felt like telling you.
