The American Library Association, through its Association for Library Service to Children division, released a recommended reading list
today for Harry Potter fans waiting impatiently for the July 16 release of the sixth JK Rowling novel in the series.
The list was created by children's librarians using the following criteria: "books that have similar story elements and replicate accessibility, tone and flavor; and books that are similar in theme but may be more complex."
Included in the first is Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series. More "complex" novels included Michael Ende's The Neverending Story, C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, Madaleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time and Christopher Paolini's Eragon.

Great list. I already have loads to read, though, so I don't think I'll need it this summer. Right ow I'm on the 35 HP book (HBP PReparation) and after I've read HBP I'm planning on reading the CHronicles of Narnia.

I agree with Cheeser about the His Dark Materials Trilogy. It is a wonderful collection of books. I think they are going to make it into a movie too.
Wow, I have read most of these books!

That is a good thing to do to keep children occupied. I read The Neverending Story and The Chronicles of Narnia when I was younger. I started reading the Harry Potter series all over again just to have it fresh in my mind for book six.

I have a big summer reading list all right but nothing to do with Harry Potter. I have to read young adult literature, shakespeare classics and non-ficton books. I won't have the time to check out one of them this summer.

To go with Wrinkle in Time, there are also her books, Many Waters, Swiftly Tilting Planet and A Wind in the Door. If you found Wrinkle in Time at all enjoyable you will enjoy these as well. Many Waters is actually about the twins.
I read the His Dark Materials trilogy, and it held me firmly in its grasp, (between GoF and OotP), but the ending was a bit of a let down. Could be a chick thing.
The Chronicles of Narnia...ahh, that series is one of my first loves of reading. LOTR and The Hobbit, also great reading.
One of the wonders of Harry Potter is introducing kids to reading, once you get them started, it is easier to get them to read other things.

This is a great idea. There are also a lot of us who are re-reading the series to prepare for the release. Reading a chapter a day up until the release. Should be on OotP Chapter 15, today! I'm going to have to check out some of these stories for after I've read and re-read HBP a few dozen times.

I might check out these books after H-BP, but I will be too busy re-reading the first five Harry Potter books to find time to read them pre-release.

Well, maturally they'll be wanting to use the HP phenomenon to gets kids reading other stuff too. Of course, the hardcore fans will be reading up on the earlier HPs in that time!

I love the Chronicals of Nania and Lemony Snickets books! If I could chose another book of the genre it would be Peter Pan, as even though it isn't quite the same, it still has magic and fun in.
