The American Library Association, through its Association for Library Service to Children division, released a recommended reading list
today for Harry Potter fans waiting impatiently for the July 16 release of the sixth JK Rowling novel in the series.
The list was created by children's librarians using the following criteria: "books that have similar story elements and replicate accessibility, tone and flavor; and books that are similar in theme but may be more complex."
Included in the first is Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series. More "complex" novels included Michael Ende's The Neverending Story, C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, Madaleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time and Christopher Paolini's Eragon.

Oh I'm excited about this. I've read a few, but I'm glad there's a list out there. It's nice to have a catalog of interests onhand. My next read is the Cronicles of Narnia.

The series of unfortunate events are infuriatingly good. Curse that man and his depressing but spellbinding books. Also Eragon is good. Long, but good.

We don't need librarians to tell us that there are other good books available! It annoys me, 'cos they're only doing it for publicity! Anyway, I'd prefer to re-read (for the hundredth time)the HP books at the moment! :@)

Hmmm....
Well, you see, I've never really enjoyed any other book as much as I enjoy the Harry Potter books. There's just something about them that's so, well, intruiging. I tried A Series of Unfortunate Events. I'm currently as the Eighth Book. They're nice, but not as spectacular as Harry Potter (in the most non-offensive way possible)...
I think I'll check out some other books on the ALA list at the bookstore. I'll take Cheeser's advice and try His Dark Materials, but I still don't think that it will be as great as Harry Potter.
What about the Lord of the Rings? I've been meaning to start that trilogy for ages!

I'm so glad they made that list. And also thanks to you hpana for putting it on your site. I love fantasy books and I have read a few on the list, and have wanted to read a few of the others, but some of them I have never even heard of. I can't wait to start reading them. Maybe they'll be as good as the Harry Potter series. One can only hope

These are all wonderful books (or series) and are well worth a read by JKR's HP fans. The ALA is certainly tapping into a positive force for reading by making their recommendations to Potter fans in such a manner. Nicely done!
