The American Library Association, through its Association for Library Service to Children division, released a recommended reading list
today for Harry Potter fans waiting impatiently for the July 16 release of the sixth JK Rowling novel in the series.
The list was created by children's librarians using the following criteria: "books that have similar story elements and replicate accessibility, tone and flavor; and books that are similar in theme but may be more complex."
Included in the first is Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series. More "complex" novels included Michael Ende's The Neverending Story, C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, Madaleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time and Christopher Paolini's Eragon.

I think that's good. It's really hard (well, I know for me it was!) to put down Harry Potter and read something else. But once I did, I couldn't stop! I've read the first 5 books in Terry Goodkind's "Sword of Truth" series. These are like 700, 800 and 900 page books, and I just zoom right thru them! I also read Demons & Angels by Dan Brown, and I finally finished the last two books of The Lord of the Rings Triology. I read all of those books within the last 8 months! I'm addicted to reading more than ever now! So, by all means, it's good to read stuff similar to HP, but I would encourage everyone to try some books from different genres.

Before I became overly obsessed with HP I enjoyed Lemony Snicket, and The Chronicles of Narnia, but ever since HP they sort of lost their... well, their interesting-ness. (is that even a word?)

Oooo, I love A Series of Unfortunate Events. Plus the movie rocked. Anyway, I know I'm going to read to pass the time, once I get out of school, of course. Only 2 more days!

For lots more recommendations, check out the "Bookaholics come here!" thread in the forums (Great Hall). I adored the Narnia books as a kid and have read and re-read the set my grandmother gave me twenty years ago (ugh! how'd I get to be 26?!?!), not to mention my well-thumbed LOTR + Hobbit that appeared a year later... Books, books, books, gimme lots of books... Hey, is there something like methadone for an addiction to the printed word? :-P

Hey Cheeser, me too. The Dark Materials series was excellent. The 2nd time my younger brother ever recommended a book to me (the first was the first Harry Potter book) and I loved them. I'll always adore the Narnia Series I read them in year 3 and my teacher thought I was lying!
It only takes me a couple of days to read a book, so I don't want to start rereading the series too early. At the moment I'm reading The Shining, Stephen King, somehow I dont' think that's on the list.

Oddly, I'm not into the fantasy genre, though, of course, I love HP. That said, perhaps I should give some of these suggestions a try, as I may end up liking them as well. I have read and loved "A Series of Unfortunate Events" (not really fantasy, are they, though?). I've read and enjoyed "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit;" I read those only a few years ago. I read everyone's comments so far for suggestions so I'll have to pick up a few of these at the library after I finish HBP.
I'm two chapters from finishing re-reading the HP series right now, then I'm just gonna rest my eyes until July 16th!

Personally...I don't care what they recommend...I read all kinds of books...so, I don't necissarily want something that is just like Harry Potter....I like variety...plus, I've read some of those...they just aren't as good as Harry Potter....

My advice to pass the time is to read all of the harry potter hints and clues books. they help you figure out what's coming.
