The American Library Association, through its Association for Library Service to Children division, released a recommended reading list
today for Harry Potter fans waiting impatiently for the July 16 release of the sixth JK Rowling novel in the series.
The list was created by children's librarians using the following criteria: "books that have similar story elements and replicate accessibility, tone and flavor; and books that are similar in theme but may be more complex."
Included in the first is Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series. More "complex" novels included Michael Ende's The Neverending Story, C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, Madaleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time and Christopher Paolini's Eragon.

My advice to pass the time is to read all of the harry potter hints and clues books. they help you figure out what's coming.

I read the Chronicles of Narnia while waiting for the release of OOP. It was great. Lewis was a better fiction writer than he ever gave himself credit for.

To the older readers out there, I would definitely recommend The Otherworld Series, by Kelley Armstrong. (Has anyone read these?) Her first book in the series is called Bitten. You can preview all of her books, and read back stories on her website, which is www.kelleyarmstrong.com
Cheers!

I'm not sure if anyone has heard of the T*Witches series, but they're fairly good. They also mention HP a lot. It's more for younger readers though; the books are only about two hundred pages long.

I've read most of the books on that list like the Artemis Fowl books, LOTR, Phillip Pullman's His DArk Materials, Eragon, the chronicals of Narnia and at the moment I'm reading The Da Vinchi code by Dan Brown and its bloody amazing...almost as good as HP, book its on a different knida level and is a differnt genre.

Nothing can replace Harry Potter when it's so close to the next book release but most of the books on that list are really good. I like the Philip Pullman His Dark Materials trilogy, anything Tolkien, the Lemony Snicket books and Narnia - I've not read the neverending story but I've seen the film. I like classics too - like Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters.

I have read the Artemis Fowl books and enjoyed them but no where near as much as HP. i have seen Eragon in the shops and contemplated buying it, but now i definitely will. I am going to read The chronicles of Narnia because i want to see the film, but want to have read the books first. Another really good series is the Shannara series by Terry Brooks, they're brilliant fantasies. I also really enjoyed Ian Irvine's The View from the Mirror and The Well of Echoes Quartets; they really gripped me. i am currently reading the Dune series by Frank Herbert. They are classics; really good, but are maybe for the more advanced readers due to the language and complicated story. When Frank Herbert died his son Brian Herbert and another writer Kevin J. Anderson, carried on the Dune novels with two series prior to the events in the books by Frank Herbert. they make great prequels! Oh and i also read the LOTR books and the Silmarrilion by Tolkien, FANTASTIC! I read a lot if you haven't guessed already! A good book for all ages is His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman as they change depending on when in your life you read them. i read them before i was a teenager and thought they were great. Then i read them recently and saw the story from a completely different view and noticed things i hadn't when i was younger. The Earthsea Quartet by Ursula Le Guin are also fantastic books as well as the Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddle. I'm sorry to go on like this but i don't get to talk about books much as the rest of my family dont like the genres i do :( thanx for reading what i have to say. bye

I've heard of most of those, but have never read them.
I don't know if I will though.
Fanfiction is keeping me busy, along with my nearly full time job and church retreats.
Nice to have recommendations for books though.
I'll keep them in mind.
