The American Library Association, through its Association for Library Service to Children division, released a recommended reading list
today for Harry Potter fans waiting impatiently for the July 16 release of the sixth JK Rowling novel in the series.
The list was created by children's librarians using the following criteria: "books that have similar story elements and replicate accessibility, tone and flavor; and books that are similar in theme but may be more complex."
Included in the first is Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series. More "complex" novels included Michael Ende's The Neverending Story, C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, Madaleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time and Christopher Paolini's Eragon.

I've heard of most of those, but have never read them.
I don't know if I will though.
Fanfiction is keeping me busy, along with my nearly full time job and church retreats.
Nice to have recommendations for books though.
I'll keep them in mind.

I read Chronicles and Wrinkle years ago in school and loved them. I've been thinking of reading Eragon but just haven't had the time to do so yet. I will definitely check out the list though for ideas once I get through HBP which'll only take me a day to read the first time. :-D

I think I saw the previews at the theater for The Narnia chronicles...The lion, the witch and the wardrobe. It looks like it is going to be a great movie so I may read that but only after HBP comes out and have read it 3 times. Right now I am enjoying fanfic and re-reading all five books (again)!

Some of the books on the list i have read and are great. But the You Want To Be A Wizard? is a horrible book. i dont reccommend it at all. I was sooo bored with it i stopped reading it. But people should read Daughter of The Moon series or Sons of the Dark series. they are good books.

You want recommendations??
Read The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice... My favorite xD After Anne Rice, there's Harry Potter. You'll really like it if you're over 15. It's MUCH better than the two movies that came out... I don't really like the movies.. Anyway, the only one from the list that i've read is a series of unfortunate events, the frist one. It's good, but too child-ish, not the story, the story is good, its just is narrated for children... but is a good one. I want to read the chronicles of narnia..... we'll see

This is a good idea. I think most of the HP fans have already reread the first five and need something to fall back on. This is great for all of you who are oh so desperate(not saying that any of you are)to read something. Good luck with that. I hope you all find a good book to read while you are waiting.

If I were to make a suggesion, it would be to read the Madeleine L'Engle books. She's up there with JK, and the stuff she writes about is incredible...time stuff. Space stuff. Stuff that makes you go Woah.
I'veheard of every single one of those books, by the way.

I read Eragon, which I thought was a very good book. But...nothing can be as good as Harry Potter in my opinion. I don't know why I love these books so much, I just do! Though I have read many of the others on the list, none of them have ever come really close to HP.
