The American Library Association, through its Association for Library Service to Children division, released a recommended reading listopens in new window today for Harry Potter fans waiting impatiently for the July 16 release of the sixth JK Rowling novel in the series.

The list was created by children's librarians using the following criteria: "books that have similar story elements and replicate accessibility, tone and flavor; and books that are similar in theme but may be more complex."

Included in the first is Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series. More "complex" novels included Michael Ende's The Neverending Story, C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, Madaleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time and Christopher Paolini's Eragon.

Wow. I actually have read most of those books. Then again, I read a ot more than the average person. I hardly ever watch TV. I read instead. Im definately going to see if I can check out some of the books on the list I haven't read because I have liked all the ones on there I have. This is a great wait to pass the time to HBP, see you in line!

Just saw this article, but would like to say that I have read lots of this stuff in the classes I've taken on young adult lit and it's great. Not only just for kids of course...hehe, I loved it, too. That's how I learned obout the Artemis Fowl series. Anyone who hasn't read those should check them out.

I've read those "Series of Unfortunate Events" books, and all I can say is yawn. They're dead depressing. Nothing compares to my sweet, dearly beloved Harry Potter books. They're so well written and witty. It makes me want to stay up all night reading it and I really get sucked into Harry's world when I'm reading it and forget what's happening around me, which can be a good thing. Unless a famous celebrity walks by or sits next to me and says "Hello" and I ignore them, which would make them go away. Ha, as if. I'd recommend those Confessions of Georgia Nicholson books. Even though it's a girls' book series, it's really funny and boys would like them too. I get a stomach ache when I read those books, they're so funny.

Now they come up with suggestions. I got so desperate to read something besides HP 1-5 over and over again, that I took to reading fanfics. Well actually, I'm kind of glad about that. Now I have a never-ending supply to tide me over until July 16th.

This is a great list with many captivating authors. I have read a few of these books, but with HBP coming in less than a month, I find my time more well spent reading OotP again.

A personal favorite of mine is Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. The subject matter and amazingly rich fantasy worlds and creatures are akin to why I love Harry Potter

I might check out these books after H-BP, but I will be too busy re-reading the first five Harry Potter books to find time to read them pre-release.

That's a great step in the right direction. The Harry Potter books have given a lot of people the motivation to read and this must be upheld. Our kids will be better off for it.
