The American Library Association, through its Association for Library Service to Children division, released a recommended reading list
today for Harry Potter fans waiting impatiently for the July 16 release of the sixth JK Rowling novel in the series.
The list was created by children's librarians using the following criteria: "books that have similar story elements and replicate accessibility, tone and flavor; and books that are similar in theme but may be more complex."
Included in the first is Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series. More "complex" novels included Michael Ende's The Neverending Story, C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, Madaleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time and Christopher Paolini's Eragon.

I think the books are really good. Those other books are really good too. Amazingly enough, I usually prefer to read biographies or non fiction stuff, but there are a few fiction books that I really love.

AAARGH! They should have done this a few months ago when I was desperate for reading material! Now, I'm just cramming and re-reading the HP books over and over before HBP comes out.

Hey, maybe I'll visit there; I'm absoloutley dying for the new book to come out! I need to stop rereading the books constantly and get a life. Anybody know any good books? I read HP so much that my Mom buried the books in the dirt filled room in my basement.

The first list is mostly junk, as is the second; with the exception of C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, and Paolini.

I've read all those except for the Lemony Snicket series, and I liked them all. The Lord of the Ring series is good to, but like most people I am just rereading the first 5 Harry Potter books. I just can't get enough of Harry!

That sounds like a great list of book reads, but for me I can't stop re-reading HP. It seems like everytime you pick up a possible clue or interesting tid-bit you didn't notice before.

My own library makes a list every once in a while, I think it's really cool, I always take the list, even though it's almost the same list as before. It has age groups and everything. It's really helpful. Though some of the books I didn't like, but whatever. I hope I'll have time to go to the library and pick up some of these. It'll have to be after HBP comes out of course. I can't read anything beside HP at the moment!

The books listed are all popular children's fantasy but they do not all bare any resemblance to the Harry Potter series in style, subject matter or reading difficulty. I know one boy who was a fan of Harry Potter and rushed out to read chronicles of Narnia. He found them intensely boring and now he won't trust recommendations from anyone claiming they know a good book for a HP fan.
Personally, I think fans of Harry Potter will really like books by Diana Wynne-Jones, especially her Chrestomanci series. Adult fans would probably enjoy books by Terry Pratchett.

As long as I have Harry, I'll keep on reading that. Unfortunately, someday it will have to end =( and then I'll read the books they recommend. Rereading Harry's books is just way too tempting!

This is amazing! I've read a lot of the books on the list and I love them. The Chronicles of Narnia, The Hobbit, A Wrinkle in Time, Inkheart, A Series of Unfortunate Events and The Changeover are all extremely good books. A lot of the books on the list that I haven't read, I've heard about and I really want to read them, especially His Dark Materials Trilogy, Year of the Griffin and The Bartimaeus Trilogy. I think the list is excellant. They should have added the Lord of the Rings to list, though.

Librarians know best. I think the Library support is wonderful for the books. but the books are also great for the libraries too. There will be Harry Potter themed parties all over the planet on that Saturday, all filled with costumes, kids and fire-bolt shaped cookies!
