The American Library Association, through its Association for Library Service to Children division, released a recommended reading list
today for Harry Potter fans waiting impatiently for the July 16 release of the sixth JK Rowling novel in the series.
The list was created by children's librarians using the following criteria: "books that have similar story elements and replicate accessibility, tone and flavor; and books that are similar in theme but may be more complex."
Included in the first is Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series. More "complex" novels included Michael Ende's The Neverending Story, C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, Madaleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time and Christopher Paolini's Eragon.

Librarians know best. I think the Library support is wonderful for the books. but the books are also great for the libraries too. There will be Harry Potter themed parties all over the planet on that Saturday, all filled with costumes, kids and fire-bolt shaped cookies!

I'm guessing most of these are "kid" books but I'll still browse through it anyway......
Yeah most of the books are fairly new or published within the decade. I didn't really recognize any of the names but I might check 'em out to relieve some of the impatience in waiting for HBP! :-)

Right now I'm reading OotP. I've reread all the other Harry Potter books. I think that is the best way to wait for the new book.
But I will definetly check out some of those titles.

I have read a lot of the recommended series and books on the list such as The Young Wizards Series, Artemis Fowl, Inkheart, A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Bartimaeus Trilogy, A Wrinkle in Time, The Chronicles of Narnia, Ella Enchanted, and The Circle of Magic. They are all great books some of my favorites though they are nothing compared to Harry Potter. I am glad they made that list so that Harry Potter lovers everywhere can read some really good books and series. I am going to try to read even more of the book on the list.

This is great!!! I now have a summer reading list!
I can't wait to get started. Of course there will be a break so I can read Hp6, but that shouldn't take me very long (my eyes stick to those books like glue!)

The neverending story is depressing, and A wrinkle in time is really boring and really, well, dumb.

My friend told me that the grade 11 reading list includes HBP! Could you imagine reading your favourite series for school?! It's fabulous. Too bad it isnt required reading in college.

I just finished Eragon. I liked it, though it reminds me alot of Tolkeins style of writing.

I'm not sure about the list. Lemony Snicket and Artemis Fowl, for instance, couldn't take me so high the way HP did. Well, I pretty like Eragon. I'm quite curious about Neverending Story (I've read Michael Ende's Momo) and A Wrinkle In Time (most people talk about it), but I don't have those books. So, I just read the books in my own list.

Well, I'd like to read "The Chronicles of Narnia".
When I was a little baby girl I saw the comic from Dysney and I cried when the lion dies... jaja
But I didn't know that it has books and all of that, and more than one book. Sounds great!

This is good because when J. K. Rowling stops writing the Harry Potters us readers will have something else to read. Well, until the next great drama comes.

Wow, I shelve all those books in the Children's Dept. at my local library where I work. I love the Chronicles of Narnia and still read them when I can even though I'm not a "child" anymore. There's just way too much fun to be had!

Hey it's pretty cool that librarians recognize how much kids love Harry Potter and are trying to encourage them to read more. My son loves Lemony Snicket but hated Eragon which really surprised me because he loves Lord of the Rings so much. Although come to think of it he loves the movies... the books are a little too hard for him to read. (He's only 9 yrs old.) It's great to have a resource list of good books though... :-)

I love most fantasy books because it gives you a chance to escape into your own world, but I would have to say the Harry Potter series would have to be my favourite. And, I happen to think a list of other books while we're waiting for the next Harry Potter book to come out is a great idea.

Being a student of literature at university, I'm probably a little old for most of these now! However, I think the list's a great idea. I really do recommend 'His Dark Materials', and 'The Chronicles of Narnia' (don't be put off by the so-called Christian indoctrination - it's only there if you want it to be!). Diana Wynne-Jones is excellent too - I'd add HEXWOOD and FIRE AND HEMLOCK to that list, but I ave to confess that Tamora Pierce is my favourite writer after JKR. The ALANNA books are wonderful, and the IMMORTALS QUARTET are my top books ever (on a level even with HP!)

While nothing of course can top Harry Potter, however there are some good books on this list. I agree Wrinkle in time was confusing, but I still liked it (try rereading it it helps). I loved the chronicles of Narnia and Unfortunate events. I just bought Eragon, but I refuse to read it til after HBP. I don't wanna get sucked in..
