The American Library Association, through its Association for Library Service to Children division, released a recommended reading list
today for Harry Potter fans waiting impatiently for the July 16 release of the sixth JK Rowling novel in the series.
The list was created by children's librarians using the following criteria: "books that have similar story elements and replicate accessibility, tone and flavor; and books that are similar in theme but may be more complex."
Included in the first is Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series. More "complex" novels included Michael Ende's The Neverending Story, C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, Madaleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time and Christopher Paolini's Eragon.

Ihave read all the artemis Fowl books, but you will be very disappointed if you think it willbe anythingnear harry Potter. the books are short, way easier to read, much less complex. But still kind of fun anyway

I think the suggestions the library made are a tiny bit peculiar, but I give them an A for effort. I have read each book in the Lemony Snicket series and although I did enjoy them (which took a bit adjusting to) they are very far from HP. I did however immensely enjoy other books written by the author who wrote The Series of Unfortunate Events. There is a great distinction between his children books and more adult themed stories (i.e. Watch Your Mouth), being an adult it was much more satisfying reading Mr. Handler's "grown up" works. In fact, they are quite brilliant, and retain the unusual qualities his younger series do. I highly recommend them, but only to the grown-ups.
I have also read The chronicles of Narnia and LOTR, and enjoy them also, but neither have captured my heart like Potter has.
I think if you enjoy reading then anything is fair game. I mean of course people are bound to find other works they enjoy. Who only likes one thing and one thing only? I understand they are trying to offer substitutes to keep some newfound readers reading, but I can't say I agree with their choice of offerings. Simply put, there isn't anything like HP, and although it can be challenging, it is worth the wait every time.
I have a habit of re-reading all the Potter books every few months, starting with the first. I do it so often I've lost count. Luckily for me I am a very fast reader! While on the subject of recommendations I am a fan of other authors as well; Edward Gorey, Edgar Allan Poe and Jane Austen, are a few of my favorites. As well as works by Brian Froud and a particular book titled Midnight Blue by Nancy A. Collins. I actually taught myself to read at the age of 4 with Mr. Poe as my guide, what a strange childhood I had.
I would really enjoy to see listings of what the HP fans read beside HP. I showed you mine, now you show me yours!

Well when I was a kid like 9 I liked the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Chronicals of Narnia, and Dragonlance books, also a chomic called Elf Quest, that had a good story line. But I also really like the Dune series by Frank Hurbert. Very intresting.

This is really helpful... I always have trouble finding books, especially after I've read Harry Potter.

Thank god for this list because the world would be sooooo boring if everybody just read harry potter and no other books.

As good as those recommended books are and may be (I've only read some of them), nothing and I mean nothing can compare to the Harry Potter series. Although, no doubt, reading can help time go by faster and will certainly make the wait seem just a tiny bit shorter.

I think it is very generous of the librarians around to give such high regard for HP books. This despite the fact that the librarian is apparently so useless or untrustworthy in the HP books that Harmione has to do all the research herself.

Nice of them to offer alternative choices to people to check out while they wait. I did not like some of the books on their list but there are others I am going to look into.
