The American Library Association, through its Association for Library Service to Children division, released a recommended reading list
today for Harry Potter fans waiting impatiently for the July 16 release of the sixth JK Rowling novel in the series.
The list was created by children's librarians using the following criteria: "books that have similar story elements and replicate accessibility, tone and flavor; and books that are similar in theme but may be more complex."
Included in the first is Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series. More "complex" novels included Michael Ende's The Neverending Story, C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, Madaleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time and Christopher Paolini's Eragon.

I think I'll just reread the other Harry Potter books while I'll wait. Otherwise I'll get confused!

Uh, I've always wanted to read The Cronicles of Narnia, as I liked it very much when it was on tv, but I could't find it nowhere!
The list should menttion Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials in first place!! When I read it I even thought it was better than Harry Potter! And that is smething to say!! :)
As for the Artemis Fowl books, they are a bit too childish I think. And too brutal.
Lord of the Rings was sort of good, but a bit boring.
So for me Harry and His Dark Materials are in the first place.

What an excellent idea. I'm really glad The Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander are on the list - I have loved them since I was little but very few people seem to have heard of them.

Actually I've already read A Wrinkle in Time and I really liked it . . . but not as good as HP!
Okay . . . If I don't have school to worry about I would absolutely read those books . .. but since I have, reading those would be impossible! :(

Well maybe I'll give them a try. Its really hard for me to find a good book to read, because I'm so picky, I dont jump at the opportunity to just read anything, I'll read the first few chapters and if I'm not intreged I'll put it down, its a bad habit that I'm hoping to fall out of :P

As a former librarian, I'm delighted that ALA has come up with this wonderful list. Knowing librarians as I do I'm certain that all of the recommendations will be simply wonderful. I've read most of the books on the list, but I plan to print out the list and read the others that I have not yet read.
Thanks ALA!

I read most of those books a long time ago. It wouldn't hurt to read them again. Still, I'd much rather be reading HBP!

I loved A Wrinkle in Time! I also think that adults might like Nora Roberts books. There are ghosts, witches, fairies, etc. Good stuff!

Ive actually read Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events , The Neverending Story, C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, Madaleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time and Christopher Paolini's Eragon. I have not read Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series. I did not enjoy Lemony Snicket's, it was rather dull. Way to go HP!! The best forever and always! Everyone should read HP!!.

Hmm... Sounds pretty neat! I definately DON'T like a series of unfortuanate events!! But I do like the Cronicles of Narnia and was thinking about the Neverending Story and A Wrinkle in Time. I read Gone With the WInd and that DEFINATELY occupied me through a HP break that my freinds and English teacher begged me to take. So i would recomend Gone with the wind...I liked it. It took me about a week and a half. Its 1034 pages. It might take you 25 days...

I think I may consider one of the books above, someone recommended Eragon. However, I will not pick up any other series, besides Harry Potter, for atleast a month.
