The American Library Association, through its Association for Library Service to Children division, released a recommended reading list
today for Harry Potter fans waiting impatiently for the July 16 release of the sixth JK Rowling novel in the series.
The list was created by children's librarians using the following criteria: "books that have similar story elements and replicate accessibility, tone and flavor; and books that are similar in theme but may be more complex."
Included in the first is Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series. More "complex" novels included Michael Ende's The Neverending Story, C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, Madaleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time and Christopher Paolini's Eragon.

I'm glad they made that list. But I will probably read those books AFTER the release of HBP and after I've read it about two times. :) don't want to get too confused!

Those are some good suggestions. I really love most of Madeleine L'Engle's writing, and the Lemony Snicket books are a lot of fun. I'd also recommend the Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander. Those are some of my favorite books ever!

Here are my recommendations from that list:
T. A. Barron's The Lost Years of Merlin series. REALLY good books (there are 5) and I HIGHLY recommend them.
The Artemis Fowl series (trying to get my hands on the fourth one now - although one of my friends, who considers himself a great book critic - says it's not as good as the others, but I haven't read it yet, and the first three books were very good and very thought provoking)
Lloyd Alexander's The Chronicles of Prydain books were very good as well
Diane Duane's So you want to be a wizard series is good
Cornelia Funke's Inkheart and The Theif Lord are very good (although Inkheart is a little strange)
From what I've read from her so far, I like Diana Wynne Jones's books
One of my other friends (cousin to the self-proclaimed book critic) highly recommends the Charlie Bone books, though I haven't read them myself yet
The Series of Unfortunate Events books are pretty good. They can be very funny at times, but I can finish them in a day (easy reads) and have sad endings (everyone dies!)
I really like Patricia Wrede and what I've read of Jane Yolen, I've liked pretty well.
A Wrinkle in Time was kind of weird, but I did read it in fourth grade, so...
[i]Ella Enchanted is very good (better than the movie - much better...sound familiar anyone?)
Chronicles of Narnia are good! I raced a friend reading them in third or fourth grade, and I won (even though he cheated and skipped every other chapter - but I still beat him!) I don't really remember them that well, but I think I liked the first one a lot.
Eragon is VERY good! Next book in the series comes out this summer!
Tamora Pierce - I LOVE her stuff!!!! Especially the books that take place in Tortall! She's written more than 20 books (all of them either take place in the kingdom of Tortall or are about these four kids in the Circle of Magic series)
His Dark Materials series is very good. (I agree with Cheeser!)
And LotR was pretty good, although not as good as I had expected it to be. (I couldn't get through The Hobbit though. It was like Harry says of Professor Binns: "In another teacher's hands, it would be vaguely interesting" but I just couldn't get into the story. The "exciting" parts seemed boring to me and it was one of the only books I've ever started and not finished (course, I tried to read that a long time ago and if I tried reading it now, I might like it. Who knows?)
That concludes my book review. To summarize, the best ones on the list, I would have to say, would be T. A. Barron's The Lost Years of Merlin series, The Artemis Fowl series, Eragon, and Tamora Pierce's books.

I think I'll wait until after hbp comes out. I have read the series of unfortunate event, and they are pretty good (still don't compare to harry potter) the chronicles of narnia sounds pretty interesting, but what exactly are they abut? But for now I think I'll just stick to Harry Potter until after book 7 comes out.

Along with Harry Potter they top my list of favorite books. Also they are making new movies of these books as well, I believe it will come out in the fall.

I've read all the "Dark Is Rising" books several times apiece. The books in the series are as follows:
*Over Sea, Under Stone
*The Dark Is Rising
*Greenwitch
*The Grey King
*Silver On The Tree
These books are excellent and give HP and run for it's money. One of the coolest elements of these books is the poems in them that sum up what is going on in the books. They're in the first book, but they basically tell you what is gonna happen but you don't really understand them at first. Here they are:
On the day of the Dead, when the year too dies
Must the youngest open the oldest hills
Through the door of the birds, where the breeze breaks
There fire shall fly from the raven boy
And the silver eyes that see the wind
And the light shall have the Harp of Gold
By the pleasant lake the Sleepers lie
On Cadfan's Way where the kestrels call
Though grim from the Grey Kind shadows fall
Yet singing the Golden Harp shall guide
To break their sleep and bid them ride
When light from the Lost Land shall return
Six Sleepers shall ride, six Signs shall burn
And where the Midsummer's Tree grows tall
By Pendragon's sword the Dark shall fall
............................................
When the Dark comes rising six shall turn it back
Three from the circle, three from the track
Wood, Bronze, Iron, Water, Fire, and Stone
Five shall return and one go alone
Iron for the birthday, Bronze carried long
Wood from the burning, Stone out of song
Fire from the candle ring, water from the thaw
Six signs to the circle and the grail gone before
Fire on the mountain shall find the Harp of Gold
Played to wake the Sleepers oldest of the Old
Power from the Greenwitch lost beneath the sea
All shall find the Light at last Silver On The Tree
The books are really good. I think The Dark is Rising and Silver on the Tree are by far the best of them but the others are really good as well. I recommend these books to EVERYONE.
Eragon is also very good. I've read it 2 or 3 times since I've got it. I recommend it to everyone as well.

Great list. I already have loads to read, though, so I don't think I'll need it this summer. Right ow I'm on the 35 HP book (HBP PReparation) and after I've read HBP I'm planning on reading the CHronicles of Narnia.
