Jason Isaacs wants 'Harry Potter' fans to despise him Popular (15593)

JULY 1, 2005 at 10:46 AM

Source: MTV.com via Wizard News

Jason Isaacs, who portrays Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies, is becoming more like his character he says. In an effort to remain in character he avoids answering his fan mail, he also comments that he’s enjoyed playing Lucius and that he hopes that he will be in the next movie and that author Rowling continues to write Harry Potter books for years to come.

I'm carefully cultivating an entire generation of people who despise me, because when you're in 'Harry Potter' films you get a lot of fan mail... I haven't answered any of it, so they will hate me even more than they did to start with. They probably spent their pocket money sending me a stamped, addressed envelope. Number four is finished. I'm not signed up for number five; I haven't got a script for [it] yet, but I understand I have some things to do in the book and, if they ask me, then I would be hoping to be in it. Because that is good fun, it's ridiculously good fun to dress up as a wizard ... I hope that [JK Rowling] writes it until Harry Potter is 65 years old and on a walking frame.

Funny guy. Weird logic, but funny. He has made his character disdainful and in the process, himself. But not as effectively. He still looks pretty great to me.

Jason Isaacs is so fantastic! Even before they started the films, I was picturing him in that role. I was sooooo thrilled when they chose him and he accepted. He's just so talented at being evil and he truly seems like a really nice guy. I love it! Don't answer that fanmail! hehehe

He's a really funny guy! I think only he wouldnt care if his fans despised him! I dont really blame him though, I wouldnt want to be answering loads of fan mail either, wouldnt have time to do anything else! I really hope he comes back for the next movie though, I could seen anyone else playing the part. I still have trouble seeing someone other than Richard Harris play Dumbledore!

Hahaha.... so if Jason Isaacs is really not answering fanmail to stay in character as Lucius, would it be "in character" for him to answer mail addressed to Lucius Malfoy instead of to him? Maybe I should write such a letter...

To his most nefariousness, Lucius Malfoy,

I am writing to congratulate you on taunting and intimidating the Potter boy after he thwarted your grand plan to frame Weasley's short daughter for opening the Chamber and setting the Founder's weapon on all the filthy Mudblood scum of the school. While at first I questioned your wisdom in attempting to use Avada Kedavra on the Potter brat
a) in broad daylight, less than fifty feet from Dumbledore's office, and
b) when you know perfectly well that the Killing Curse just bounces off Potter as if it were nothing and rebounds onto its caster, breaking his power,
I soon realized that you were really aiming for that ungrateful little house-elf of yours. The wretch should have known you didn't mean to toss him a sock and invoke that ridiculous loophole in the laws of house-elf ownership.

Yours in deepest admiration,
Nepenthe Mondragon
Order of the Silver Serpent

See? Even Lucius himself couldn't resist answering a letter like that. :-P

It absolutely does not matter what Jason Isaacs does to make us dislike him, because I will never hate him. Yes, his character in the movie "The Patriot" was one of the most evil I've ever come across, but after reading countless articles, and watching countless interviews, I've come to the conclusion that he has to be one of the nicest people on earth. Plus, the fact that he is gorgeous, just makes me like him even more. ;)
Cheers!

He really is a good Lucius Malfoy. He is just as mean as I imagined him to be (well I don't know if he is in real life or not). I hope that he plays Malfoy in the next film as well.

I totally agree, LovingGeorgeWeasley. Jason Isaacs scares the stuffing out of me in pretty much every movie I've seen him in, even when he's not such an evil character like in Black Hawk Down. But his interviews are always amusing and he seems like a sweet guy. Which is why I think letters written to him as Lucius (and poking fun at Lucius a little) would make him smile. :)

And yes, *loony*, I am pretty strange. :-P

I think that not answering his fan mail is taking it a bit far. That's not being in character; that's being rude. It's one thing to go on the screen and act your part. It's one thing to do it at home to practice. But we're in an entirely different ballpark when he decides to start being rude to his fans, the only people that make him famous, and acts his character not only when shooting is over, but also when he doesn't even know if he'll continue to play the part! That is down right ridiculous.

I agree with you SiriusLivesOn, it is taken a bit far, but he may just be really into it. Some people could consider some of us Harry Potter Fans to be taking it to far. It is all in the eye of the beholder. "..but also when he doesn't even know if he'll continue to play the part.." I am not completely up to date on all information, but is he considering not continuing acting in Harry Potter anymore, or has the direcor decided to use someone else?

Nah!! He is just to darn cute for that, no matter how vile he wants to be. I understand that he wants to stay in character by not responding to fan mail. If he did, then everyone would think he is such a nice guy...thus ruining the hate we all have for his character! Nicely done.

He is a great actor and I could not imagine a better Lucius Malfoy. Though I do hate the character, I must agree with the actor: I would not mind if JK continues writing. But on the other hand, I have that nasty feeling that he is going to die in the end of the seventh book. . . It would be awful, but I believe it would be the best way to end it all. Sad but true.
