Call to boycott 'HBP' by environmental groups Popular (9285)

Environmental groups Greenpeace and the National Wildlife Federation are askingopens in new window Harry Potter fans in the U.S. not to buy the Scholastic version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince but to instead purchase the book from Canadian publisher Raincoast Books because it is printed on recycled paper.

Raincoast publishes the Harry Potter books on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, whereas Scholastic have disclosed that they use only paper that did not come from ancient or endangered forests.

Ms. Rycroft, campaigns director of Markets Initiative, a conservation group in Canada said:

If we get Harry Potter and the Bible, that pretty much covers the best sellers. Scholastic has failed to really meaningfully step forward to have Harry printed on the most environmentally friendly paper that it can be.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Scholastic, Ms. Kyle Good commented:

I think the fans who know Scholastic and the people who buy from Scholastic understand that we are an environmentally concerned company and we don't endanger forests ever with the paper we use.

Some larger publishers in the U.S. are concerned about the lack of forest-friendly paper as well as the cost and quality of the paper. Ms. Rowling's agent, Neil Blair from the Christopher Little Literary Agency said the author would not comment on the matter.

If you do choose to order your book from Canada please note that it will cost you $2 more, not including extra shipping costs. You can also check out this storyopens in new window from the BBC.

To all the environmentalists out there, do you live in a house? A house is framed with wood. Therefore, how many trees have you murdured just to live in your house??? Do you drive a car? How much of the OZONE have you destroyed from the FUMES of your evil car! YOU HYPOCRITES!!!

The books are already printed, so why would someone go through all of the trouble to go order one from Canada? It seems easier to just go up to the nearest department store or bookstore and buy a copy of the American Editon!!!

They dont need to lecture me. I have patiently waited for this book. If they feel so badly then go plant a tree but im getting my book. It sounds to me like raincoast is just trying to get more money and frankly that is just pathetic to try and make HP fans feel about trees. Afterall there are worse problems in the word.

America's thoughts and prayers go out to England on this day. 7/7/05

I don't think the complainers can prove to me that me buying the book from a publisher in another country will help matters all that much. Environmentally speaking, all their antics are just as dangerous to the environment as the people they are criticizing.

Besides, why should I send my money to another country's economy just to promote their politically motivated cause?

Instead of Hogwarts, it's Hogwash if you ask me!!!!

I think that if these enviornmentalist nutters really wanted to have an impact they should of said something 6 months ago when the book went on pre-order. I mean I love the idea of getting my book at midnight but I prefer to wait and have it in the morning waiting for me. Only a few more days...

Oh, gee, aren't they a little late on the pick-up..... Anyway, Scholastics is environmentally friendly, they plant more trees that they ever use, (just like *gasp* most big logging companies now....) They are just trying to stick their tree hugging noses someplace that it doesn't belong without doing their homework first. Most people have preordered it AGES ago, either from a bookstore or from the net... Its just a sad plea for attention from a group with nothing better to do.

Give me a break!!! These people need to worry about themselves and less about other people. Why don't they buy the recycled paper books and leave other people alone. There are a lot more important things to focus our attention on in this world, and buying books made out of recycled paper is not on the top of the list.

To quote the famous philosopher Spongebob Squarepants...
"WELL, GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!"

I recycle, don't leave the water running when I brush my teeth, never throw anything out the car window, and generally try to be a good environmental citizen, BUT, and this is a very large BUT; the only tree that I plan on hugging on July 15th is the remains of the one that sacrificed itself to the noble cause of having Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince printed one its pages. So I shall kiss my book, give it a big hug, and quietly thank the tree that died in the line of duty so that I could get my hands on it!
