Environmental groups Greenpeace and the National Wildlife Federation are asking
Harry Potter fans in the U.S. not to buy the Scholastic version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince but to instead purchase the book from Canadian publisher Raincoast Books because it is printed on recycled paper.
Raincoast publishes the Harry Potter books on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, whereas Scholastic have disclosed that they use only paper that did not come from ancient or endangered forests.
Ms. Rycroft, campaigns director of Markets Initiative, a conservation group in Canada said:
If we get Harry Potter and the Bible, that pretty much covers the best sellers. Scholastic has failed to really meaningfully step forward to have Harry printed on the most environmentally friendly paper that it can be.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for Scholastic, Ms. Kyle Good commented:
I think the fans who know Scholastic and the people who buy from Scholastic understand that we are an environmentally concerned company and we don't endanger forests ever with the paper we use.
Some larger publishers in the U.S. are concerned about the lack of forest-friendly paper as well as the cost and quality of the paper. Ms. Rowling's agent, Neil Blair from the Christopher Little Literary Agency said the author would not comment on the matter.
If you do choose to order your book from Canada please note that it will cost you $2 more, not including extra shipping costs. You can also check out this story
from the BBC.

Hmmm...this is a contreversial (sp?) issue. I don't buy a book because trees have been saved, I buy it because I like to read!

I'm all about protecting the environment and stuff, but I also want my copy ASAP. Anyway, people buy books all the time, nobody can just STOP that. Why don't they focus on preserving the ozone or fossil fuels or something?

I'm sorry but even if we didn't buy the Scholastic version of the books what would they do with all the already made books. I mean maybe they should have said something before they started publishing books.

I agree that they should have jumped on this issue before the books were printed. Now that they're already printed not buying them isn't going to save any trees... It would have made more sense to petition Scholastic to use the recycled paper before they went into print.

I guess that makes sense I think that all harry potter books should be printed on recyled paper as they are produced with such quantity but the environmental group should have acted sooner!

I'm all for recycling, but that is a bit too late, after all Scolastic has said they don't use the trees from ancient forrests, which I think is very good.
I think this is the first time, since Harry Potter has come out that there is been a problem from Pro Recycling groups. No one else has mentioned it before. Why now?

It seems to me that Greenpeace saw a way of getting themselves some publicity and decided to hop on the bandwagon that is Harry Potter. How pathetic is this? I mean, honestly! If you're going to boycott books, why not ALL published books in the US? If you're going to have a problem with using paper not from previously recycled sources, then they need to boycott ALL publishers not falling into that catagory. That means going after the industry wide problem, not one type of books. I mean, HONESTLY...
Guess they didn't think this out too well. Not that I'm against the use of recycled paper. I think it's a great idea. But this smacks just a little too much of wanting to get their name in the hat.
Shame on you for trying to turn the entertainment of children & adults into a political topic.

I agree that more should be done to enforce recycled paper to be used over paper that just wasn't taken from ancient forests, but more should be done to get the word out. If I would've known about this earlier, I more than likely would've bought my book from Canada. However, it's too late now.

What is particularly funny, is that I remember signing a petition earlier this year for the book to be published on recycled paper and it was said that it would be. If Greenpeace did not send the same petition to scholastic, then I imagine they should shut it. They had the petitions and the awareness about this issue months ago, and if they slacked off with one publisher-more importantly the one US publisher-I am a bit peeved by this. Why didn't they send them the petition then, then had they not responded accordingly they could have let us all know and HPANA would have had a news article stating scholastic refused the requests of thousands of fans. I think they dropped the ball a bit-as there are only 8 days left and most of trully could care less if these are prekilled trees, or freshly killed trees-so long as they have the HBP on the pages.
Why did they go through all their trouble of the petition months ago if they were not involving scholastic as well?? Makes no sense-and if they did include them a secondary petition should have been made for them after they dismissed the first.

Where were Greenpeace and NWF when any other book is published? And why are they speaking out now that the book is already printed? I think they are more intrested in the publicity generated, and not the issues they expound.

What amazes me the most is how many HPANA members don't agree with using recycled paper. How can a person not care about the trees that are being cut down to print a book? Sure, it's one of the most anticipated books in several years, but when it comes down to it, what's more important? A book? Or a world that can continue to sustain life? I can see how Greenpeace is a bit late in the matter, as the books have already been printed. There is still book seven, so perhaps at least a few trees will be spared.
