Environmental groups Greenpeace and the National Wildlife Federation are asking
Harry Potter fans in the U.S. not to buy the Scholastic version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince but to instead purchase the book from Canadian publisher Raincoast Books because it is printed on recycled paper.
Raincoast publishes the Harry Potter books on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, whereas Scholastic have disclosed that they use only paper that did not come from ancient or endangered forests.
Ms. Rycroft, campaigns director of Markets Initiative, a conservation group in Canada said:
If we get Harry Potter and the Bible, that pretty much covers the best sellers. Scholastic has failed to really meaningfully step forward to have Harry printed on the most environmentally friendly paper that it can be.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for Scholastic, Ms. Kyle Good commented:
I think the fans who know Scholastic and the people who buy from Scholastic understand that we are an environmentally concerned company and we don't endanger forests ever with the paper we use.
Some larger publishers in the U.S. are concerned about the lack of forest-friendly paper as well as the cost and quality of the paper. Ms. Rowling's agent, Neil Blair from the Christopher Little Literary Agency said the author would not comment on the matter.
If you do choose to order your book from Canada please note that it will cost you $2 more, not including extra shipping costs. You can also check out this story
from the BBC.

I am a pro-environment person as well but come on 8 days before the release the books are already printed and the damage is done. Maybe they should be a little more prompt with their protests and we can stop it beforehand.

I seems that the environmental groups must have believed that we are waiting to the last minute to get a book. Most of us have reserved a copy for months, and do not intend to pay an extra 2 dollars, and shipping charges just because the Canadian version is made of recycled paper. I am an environmentaly-thoughtful American citizen, and want most books to be made of recycled paper. However, this is an EXTREME CONDITION!! Hopefully, Scholastic will make more books from recycled paper in the future. These people are talking nonsense.

It's a bit late for this now, but I would have thought that Scholastic would have made enough money from Harry Potter to be able to spend a bit more cash and get environmentally friendly paper.

I am all for supporting environmental issues, but I really want my book! I pre-ordered it forever ago, and there is no way I will get it from Canada on time! Scholastic is such a large company and I am sure they are environment-conscious.

That was a good idea that Raincoast had, but there is no way I'm boycotting Scholastic! I couldn't if I wanted to, I preordered my copy back in January.

I was outraged when I read the title of this article, but if they are just saying, buy the green one instead, then they have my full support. It's an excellent idea, but I have to admit, even if HBP was printed on paper made from mahogany trees from the vanishing rainforests, I might just not be able to resist temptation...I'd probably buy it anyway.....although Jo would never allow that, so luckily we'll never be tested there ;)

After some research done after an insightful post, it seems scholastic uses scrapped wood from the logging industry(which would normally be thrown into a chipper!) or farmed trees, which are replinished and farmed over and over again.(My family has some land that this is done with-it helps with keeping other trees safe!)
I don't think they cut down redwoods to print HP. I am very proenvironment, and do recycle. I usually buy recycled goods, but don't have any issue with using what would normally be wasted to print books. It actually seems like it would be on the side of pro environment.

I think this is a little late news. I mean there are thousands of people who have already pre ordered their books from scholastics. I know that scholastics wouldn't do anything to endanger the forest, so I am not worried about it.

Yes, the books are already printed. Greenpeace and the other organization need someone in leadership who is a little quicker with staging their boycotts. What do they suggest? Let the already printed books rot away in a warehouse? The environment IS important and those of you who are 'burning hippies' in effigy need to calm down a bit. I'm not going to order it from Canada because it isn' practical as I've already got one coming (which I paid for months ago) but I understand where the boycotters are coming from.

It's a great idea it's just too late but I read somewhere that they were going to print the next books with recycled paper. I really could care less what paper they used just as long as I got to read the book!!!

Hmmm.....so the environmentally friendly paper costs more. I'm all for keeping the enviroment cleam and everything but if there not destroying endangered forests then I see no problem and see no reason why we should pay more....I mean....hello.....it's PAPER!

I guess the environmentalists are just gonna have to deal with it. The books have already been printed. They should have thought of this a LONG time ago. But I don't really care anyways because from what I hear the books are printed on paper made from trees grown special for scholastic.
