Environmental groups Greenpeace and the National Wildlife Federation are asking
Harry Potter fans in the U.S. not to buy the Scholastic version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince but to instead purchase the book from Canadian publisher Raincoast Books because it is printed on recycled paper.
Raincoast publishes the Harry Potter books on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, whereas Scholastic have disclosed that they use only paper that did not come from ancient or endangered forests.
Ms. Rycroft, campaigns director of Markets Initiative, a conservation group in Canada said:
If we get Harry Potter and the Bible, that pretty much covers the best sellers. Scholastic has failed to really meaningfully step forward to have Harry printed on the most environmentally friendly paper that it can be.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for Scholastic, Ms. Kyle Good commented:
I think the fans who know Scholastic and the people who buy from Scholastic understand that we are an environmentally concerned company and we don't endanger forests ever with the paper we use.
Some larger publishers in the U.S. are concerned about the lack of forest-friendly paper as well as the cost and quality of the paper. Ms. Rowling's agent, Neil Blair from the Christopher Little Literary Agency said the author would not comment on the matter.

I'd like the books to be printed on recycled paper as much as the next concerned citizen, but I want the book at midnight, I've preordered, and that's that. Sorry if that sounds selfish- but I do my share of not wasting paper and trying to buy recycled products- I don't need someone else telling me what Harry Potter book I should and shouldn't buy.

Maybe they should have published this article a few months ago... I've already pre-ordered my copy from schlostics. I actually have a cousin that works at schlostics and they my do some environmental things but I wish they would print on recyled paper...

I totally agree that this should have been addresed a while ago. I heard something about this issue weeks ago but i haven't heard anything since. And now only days until it's release it is a little late to ask fans to cancle their orders and reorder them. I am happy that i live in Canada and my book will be on recycled paper.If its not a problem for you it would be great if you changed your order but i really don'tt hink they should expect someone to go through that trouble. If this issue meant that much to them should'nt they have asked us earlier?

I agree with some others that left posts and said that this seems a little late since a lot of books are already pre ordered. Plus Scholastic says that they are forest and environment friendly. I wonder if it just has to do mostly with the competition and who can sell the most books.

I understand the sentiment behind it and I think it's a good idea but it will not work. If they wanted this to work they should have initiated it looong ago. Most people in the U.S. will not want to wait for an order to come in now when they can just drive down and get it quickly. It's an important concern indeed but I wish they had done something when news came out about Scholastic not using recycled paper. Now it's too late to make much of an impact. Fans are so thirsty for tge book now that they can't wait for an order from Canada to come in & they don't wanna pay more of course at this time. Bad timing on the environmentalists part but well intentioned.

And even if they didn't pre-order it, people wouldn't wait longer to get it than everyone else just because Scholastic didn't print the books on recycled paper.

The only way that you could possibly get the canadian is if you order it online and have it shipped (which,technically, does cost extra...yah) so it think that there are asking WAY to much from us Americans...yah! :P HAHA I am so hyper right now :D!

Trillions! I don't necesarily agree will all of Greenpeace's motives, but it would be good to nuse more recycled paper, especially with a book like this when so many copies are being printed. I wish Scholastic printed HP on recylced paper!

And i seriously think that it is outragious that the canadians make a protest NOW! I mean, i know that all of you Harry Potter Fans out there are going to let recycled paper and none recycled paper to get in your way of reading HBP! Honestly.... if there is a single person on this sight, or is a dedicated reader of this sight, that is going to stop reading Harry Potter because of some recycled paper i think that you should leave.
