Call to boycott 'HBP' by environmental groups Popular (9285)

JULY 7, 2005 at 9:30 AM

Posted by GERI
Source: New York Times

Environmental groups Greenpeace and the National Wildlife Federation are askingopens in new window Harry Potter fans in the U.S. not to buy the Scholastic version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince but to instead purchase the book from Canadian publisher Raincoast Books because it is printed on recycled paper.

Raincoast publishes the Harry Potter books on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, whereas Scholastic have disclosed that they use only paper that did not come from ancient or endangered forests.

Ms. Rycroft, campaigns director of Markets Initiative, a conservation group in Canada said:

If we get Harry Potter and the Bible, that pretty much covers the best sellers. Scholastic has failed to really meaningfully step forward to have Harry printed on the most environmentally friendly paper that it can be.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Scholastic, Ms. Kyle Good commented:

I think the fans who know Scholastic and the people who buy from Scholastic understand that we are an environmentally concerned company and we don't endanger forests ever with the paper we use.

Some larger publishers in the U.S. are concerned about the lack of forest-friendly paper as well as the cost and quality of the paper. Ms. Rowling's agent, Neil Blair from the Christopher Little Literary Agency said the author would not comment on the matter.

If you do choose to order your book from Canada please note that it will cost you $2 more, not including extra shipping costs. You can also check out this storyopens in new window from the BBC.

Golly, they're just a little bit too late with this, don't you think? After all, I ordered my copy back in January, and I don't think those Canadian publishers are going to get the book delivered to me on July 16th!

Erm, true I haven't pre-ordered (which I'm getting paranoid about by the way), but if I were to order in Canada, whats the likely chance that I get the book 2 months after the release date =S

And at the risk of sounding stingy (which I'm not, would cough up more if I truely believed in the cause), but making people pay more, how ever small the amount, isn't giving them much incentive.

Then there's the small issue of there being such massive prints once in a while. This doesn't happen everyday! Besides are they going to gaurantee that the paper is 100% recycled? Doubt it! Sort of like the 'Reflex' paper that makes me laugh...30% recycled...what happened to the remaining 70%???

People should believe what ever it is they want to believe, no objection there. I just wish they didn't feel the need to impart their belief systems on people that aren't much interested. While I myself at times think of the environment, I do my recycling bit for the world. I'm not an extremist...and face it, you need new, fresh, clean paper first before you get recycled paper...I think =P

No offense, but why would someone in America want to go through all the trouble of paying an extra $2, extra shipping and handling charges, and not get the book on the release date? This doesn't make sense to me.

I really am an environmentally aware and concerned person, but I'm afraid that I am not going to buy the Raincoast version of HBP-- everything is already arranged for the Scholastic version, and so the big question is, why didn't the environmentalists do this like five months ago, before all the Scholastic printings and whatnot?

I agree that greenpeace was a little late on the uptake on this one. But all the negative comments I've read from people is just rude. I am Canadian and am proud that Raincoast has decided (from GOF on) especially with how huge a phenomenon Harry Potter has become. That said' I'm not saying that everyone should boycot Scholastic for not recycling. If you ordered your copy thru them then good for you. Maybe they can chage their policy in the future. this close to the release though- it doesn't much matter- the books are already printed.

Yeah they were a bit late in telling us not to buy from Scholastic. I'm going to buy it from them wether or not they print it on recycled paper. I just want to read the stinkin' book!! The books are already printed and ready to go, so what is the use of telling everyone to buy them from a different company now?

Well it would pretty hard for me not to get it from Canada because I live in Canada.
I can see why they are conserned but why go so far?
People will just end up getting the book from the nearest place and as quick as possible so they aren't going to care whether or not they are made of recycled paper.

WOW.... the're just a bit late aren't they. I ordered mine months ago, and if they think I'm cancelling and ordering from Canada, then waiting another 2 weeks for that one to arrive, THE'RE NUTS. If it were that big of a deal then they should have said something before now. I understand the whole recycle thing but with only 9 days to go, I've waited long enough, I want my book now.

I think re-cycling is great, however, most people pre-ordered thier book months ago. Also, I live in the UK and it would cost me twice as much to buy the book, and have to wait a few extra days while it is being posted to me. (Don't think so, I've waited long enough!) It's something Greenpeace should think about for future publications.

How can they ask us NOW to boycott the u.s. version?????????! ! !
It's absolutly insane! ! ! ! most people probably pre-ordered when the name of the book was released in January! i know i did! ! ! !
The books are printed...like 10 million people have pre-ordered....and they think crazy fans like us are going to just say

"oh....i've been waiting for this book for a year, but now that's it's here....well, i'll just send it back."????????????????????

If the think that's going to work...they're off their rockers! i mean it's a good cause and all, but a week before the release is REALLY asking a lot from anticipating fans.

Well, ok. It is a little too late for that. Almost half the the kids under 20 have pre-ordered their Harry Potter book already. Plus, we already have the first five on tree paper, so it would be wierd to have it on recycled paper.
