Environmental groups Greenpeace and the National Wildlife Federation are asking
Harry Potter fans in the U.S. not to buy the Scholastic version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince but to instead purchase the book from Canadian publisher Raincoast Books because it is printed on recycled paper.
Raincoast publishes the Harry Potter books on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, whereas Scholastic have disclosed that they use only paper that did not come from ancient or endangered forests.
Ms. Rycroft, campaigns director of Markets Initiative, a conservation group in Canada said:
If we get Harry Potter and the Bible, that pretty much covers the best sellers. Scholastic has failed to really meaningfully step forward to have Harry printed on the most environmentally friendly paper that it can be.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for Scholastic, Ms. Kyle Good commented:
I think the fans who know Scholastic and the people who buy from Scholastic understand that we are an environmentally concerned company and we don't endanger forests ever with the paper we use.
Some larger publishers in the U.S. are concerned about the lack of forest-friendly paper as well as the cost and quality of the paper. Ms. Rowling's agent, Neil Blair from the Christopher Little Literary Agency said the author would not comment on the matter.
If you do choose to order your book from Canada please note that it will cost you $2 more, not including extra shipping costs. You can also check out this story
from the BBC.

Well, as many have said, Greenpeace was a bit late to catch most of the diehard fans, but hopefully their message will reach others in time. And to those of you with the darling sarcastic attitudes: I hope you have to live in the world you're making.

Sorry, but I'm sticking with "horribly environment unfriendly version," so please forgive me. Like I'm gonna pay two dollars more with shipping just to make tree huggers happy. They wish!

If this would have come up earlier in the year then i might have bought a book from Canada. But the books are already printed so its no use now except for the ones who haven't bought them yet.

That's a good idea, and a good cause to be promoting, however, they should've tried to convince people earlier.

They're pretty optomistic if they think people will get HP from Canada, when that means they're likely to get it later. Sorry, but one book wont make much difference, and I don't think people will bother.

It a good thing they are thinking about the forest and nature. But I am still going to buy the Scholastic version because me not buying the book will not grow back the trees and the rest of my collection is already Scholastic and I want to keep it that way.

Scholastic is an environmentally friendly company-they have many recycling programs. Just because they are not using 100% recycled paper does not mean they are not an environmentally conscious company. Greenpeace is simply doing what it does, riding the publicity wave trying to get their voices heard. Unfortunately, they have no problem besmerging names and making accusations. I do feel that scholastic is a good company-I wish they were printed on recycled paper because our environment is of course our first priority-without it we will all perish. But I feel that this issue was only brought up now for the reasons I have just sated. I will not boycott scholastic-they are a great company. I do however, urge them to print the seventh book of this series on recycled paper. Not that the word of a lowly fan speaks much . . .

I agree that in this day and age that we need to use caution when dealing with environmental issues as the earth is in trouble from years of abuse. I also agree that with a distributor as large as scholastic they could set a very good example by switching their printing to a recycled paper product.

I guess I just don't know that much about it, but I'd like good quality books that I can pass on to my children. I want to take a picture of them buying the book and save the receipt with the book. I know this is literary history. I want the best paper and to be kind to the environment. I like the idea of certain trees that are raised just for this purpose and not hurting the other, the rain forest, the ancient trees, and recycling our other paper.

I thought Scholastic used recycled paper also! Even though it's more convient i'll go to Chapters more often now. It's worth it isn't it? I didn't pre-order the 6th book though cause i'm going to try and get the door prize...

What a pity that I'm finding out about this at this stage of the wait for the release of HBP! I'm a firm supporter of the environment (my family refer to me as the Environmental Police), and I thought that this issue had already been addressed by Scholastic. Shame on them. I'll know for #7!
