Environmental groups Greenpeace and the National Wildlife Federation are asking
Harry Potter fans in the U.S. not to buy the Scholastic version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince but to instead purchase the book from Canadian publisher Raincoast Books because it is printed on recycled paper.
Raincoast publishes the Harry Potter books on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, whereas Scholastic have disclosed that they use only paper that did not come from ancient or endangered forests.
Ms. Rycroft, campaigns director of Markets Initiative, a conservation group in Canada said:
If we get Harry Potter and the Bible, that pretty much covers the best sellers. Scholastic has failed to really meaningfully step forward to have Harry printed on the most environmentally friendly paper that it can be.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for Scholastic, Ms. Kyle Good commented:
I think the fans who know Scholastic and the people who buy from Scholastic understand that we are an environmentally concerned company and we don't endanger forests ever with the paper we use.
Some larger publishers in the U.S. are concerned about the lack of forest-friendly paper as well as the cost and quality of the paper. Ms. Rowling's agent, Neil Blair from the Christopher Little Literary Agency said the author would not comment on the matter.
If you do choose to order your book from Canada please note that it will cost you $2 more, not including extra shipping costs. You can also check out this story
from the BBC.

What a pity that I'm finding out about this at this stage of the wait for the release of HBP! I'm a firm supporter of the environment (my family refer to me as the Environmental Police), and I thought that this issue had already been addressed by Scholastic. Shame on them. I'll know for #7!

I don't think that right for them to target HBP. It isn't like there aren't a ton of other books that aren't printed on unrecycled paper. They're doing this because it's such a huge way for them to get publicity easliy! I'd like to go out and by 10 copies just for that. They make it sound like scholastic deliberately did something to the enviornment.

I am environmentally concerned (as lots of other fans), but do you actually believe that we are thinking about that when it comes to Harry? I mean, I can't order the book by Internet so I have to buy it at a bookstore, but the Canadian version doesn't get here. I am not waiting one more second to see if I can get another version if I see Scholastic's first! Besides, I think I like the cover better. . .

It is a noble action, what they are trying to do, since we should all look out for the environment, yet I believe that it has been announced too late for us who have all ready preordered to actually do something about it. I do hope that those who have not yet bought their copy, will buy the canadian version.

I do understand why it's so important to those people, but come ON!!! As many have said, it's already printed!!!!! Besides, it's more convenient (and cheaper) for us Americans to buy from Scholastic. That environment society thingy should do something about it THEMSELVES! We are just fans and are too obsessed with HP to boycott it!

I must say that when I first heard of this story back in January I thought that it was just a thing that was going to pass away. People should just buy the books which they want, it's their money after all. However, I would like to add that even though I'm with Scholastic's side on this one I must say that people around the world should at least do their part in helping the environment.

Should have came out with this sooner. ALready got my copy on the way and even if i didn't i'd still buy from scholastic because it's already printed out and buying from canada isn't going to make that change the fact they have all these books printed out already.

It's really sad that they should've taken these steps about ten years ago, look how much rainforests have been cut down since then and then think about how far we've gotten today, it's really sad.

Even though I'm all for the environment, I've already pre-ordered my book and I really would not want to have to wait anymore time to get my copy of the book. And even though Scholastic does not use 100% recycled paper they did say that they don't endanger the forests where they get the paper...I mean, at least they're making an effort.

I LOVE Raincoast Books. Plus, we have a different cover for our books too. Whoooo. >P
I love the environment. If publishing companies are still a billion steps behind everyone by not printing on recycled paper then why shouldn't people bring attention to it. Cudos to those people who aren't afraid to stand up for the environment!

I doubt people will buy the book from Raincost, if they live in the US, really. I can see the point, but they should have given the message far earlier.

Anyway, we do need trees. Otherwise, what would these people find to hug and anthropomorphize in stories and song? Why don't they go buy some land and plant some trees, then do nothing with them. That would be productive and environmentally friendly!

I think these people should have said this when the preorders started in January. Like over 1 million copies have been preordered in the US alone, so what is going to make them change their minds? Oh well.

I ordered my copy in a local bookstore, and have no idea which version they'll hand out. I hope it's the UK child version.
Let's refresh, there's a news quite like this back in February. It said this terrible things, like HP production need so much water and electricity and so on. Yeah, I don't wanna be rude to my mother nature, but I also want my books to be last for more.
