Call to boycott 'HBP' by environmental groups Popular (9285)

Environmental groups Greenpeace and the National Wildlife Federation are askingopens in new window Harry Potter fans in the U.S. not to buy the Scholastic version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince but to instead purchase the book from Canadian publisher Raincoast Books because it is printed on recycled paper.

Raincoast publishes the Harry Potter books on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, whereas Scholastic have disclosed that they use only paper that did not come from ancient or endangered forests.

Ms. Rycroft, campaigns director of Markets Initiative, a conservation group in Canada said:

If we get Harry Potter and the Bible, that pretty much covers the best sellers. Scholastic has failed to really meaningfully step forward to have Harry printed on the most environmentally friendly paper that it can be.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Scholastic, Ms. Kyle Good commented:

I think the fans who know Scholastic and the people who buy from Scholastic understand that we are an environmentally concerned company and we don't endanger forests ever with the paper we use.

Some larger publishers in the U.S. are concerned about the lack of forest-friendly paper as well as the cost and quality of the paper. Ms. Rowling's agent, Neil Blair from the Christopher Little Literary Agency said the author would not comment on the matter.

If you do choose to order your book from Canada please note that it will cost you $2 more, not including extra shipping costs. You can also check out this storyopens in new window from the BBC.

They make a good point but wait a minute. . THEY'RE A LITTLE LATE. It would have been nice to order on recycled paper, but why did they wait to speak up until the last minute. There have been so many preorders already. Also, I know its a good cause but not everybody is going to drop extra money on it- my parents wouldn't and I wouldn't ask them to either. All they are doing now is making a bunch of HP fans feel guilty. There are worse examples of non-recycling, then HP printings.

As far as Scholastic's comments go- I have a feeling these were said more so to deflect bad press then anything else.

Nice idea, but WAAAY too late folks - anybody who really cares has had their copy pre-ordered for so long it's not going to make a difference. Now give me my HBP! ;-)

Its a nice thought by these people but people have already ordered the books and the printed ones will still be sold. They need to stop being hippies.

I agree that this type of comment is really too late. The book will be out in a little over a week and most fans have pre ordered wether online or from a book store.

Its a pity that the books are not printed on recycled paper but there is very little most people will do about changing now with so little time left.

This may just be a ploy from the canadian company to sell more books?

It sounds like they already cut the trees down and printed the books. Seems a bit...well...to late, doesn't it?

Althoug I am totally for the whole recycled paper thing, it's not much good now is it? THe books are already made, so if we didn't buy them it would be much more wastful. Atleast if we buy the evil American books they are going to use.

They shouldn't stop people from buying the books on the basis of what paper they're made from. Recycled paper is a positive thing, but I'm sure big publishing companies such as Scholastic and Bloomsbury would be involved in a little woodland management.

I think it's a little late for their complaints! Shouldn't they have brought this up a little earlier? Perhaps with book 7, this option can be consitered.

Are you crazy?
I am buying the Schoalstic version, I already have it ordered and I am not changing now.
However I don't like Schoalstic's excuse, they kinda beat around the bush with it. Probably because they know it is true.

Okay first of all I have already pre-ordered mine and i am sure millions of others did as well. So first of all if they want us to do this they could say something a little sooner. NOT 9 days before the book is due to come out. So its their own fault.

I understand why they are concerned but the book has already been printed alot of them have been pre-ordered, so it's a little late now. But they can make a request for the next book, if they start now.

Well, I can see the whole enviroment thing, but I do have a couple of comments to make.
The books, by this time, are all printed up, so if people were not to buy them, trees would have died for no reason.
Besides, other things are recycled, so why should this group just ask for the Bible and Harry Potter to be on recycled paper?

You know, I DID order my book from Canada, because it has the same wording as the British version. Not because of the paper. While I think this is a nice idea, and people SHOULD get books off of recycled/partially recycled paper- I agree with Elishka, isn't this a bit late??? Most people have already preordered their book!

Who cares what it is printed on I just want the book. I guess we can assume these are not avid HP fans. Only 8 more days, so excited. I agree with others this should have been said a few months ago before everyone ordered their books if they are serious. Only 8 more days!!! Excitement pouring over me. 8 more days.

I am a big believer in protecting the world's finite supply of trees, but I don't think the Environmentalist groups won't have enough influence to keep fans from buying off Scholastic. I agree that the amount of paper used to print the books is too much, but fans just want the book.

I think greenpeace is a wonderful group, and as other's had said, if they came out with this months ago, I would have ordered from Canada. But, being the books are already printed, I'd much rather see the Scholastic books in the hands of the fans, rather than having them sit in storage - the damage has already been done, the trees already used - why do this now? The trees would have been used in vain, then, which seems a lot worse to me.
