Environmental groups Greenpeace and the National Wildlife Federation are asking
Harry Potter fans in the U.S. not to buy the Scholastic version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince but to instead purchase the book from Canadian publisher Raincoast Books because it is printed on recycled paper.
Raincoast publishes the Harry Potter books on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, whereas Scholastic have disclosed that they use only paper that did not come from ancient or endangered forests.
Ms. Rycroft, campaigns director of Markets Initiative, a conservation group in Canada said:
If we get Harry Potter and the Bible, that pretty much covers the best sellers. Scholastic has failed to really meaningfully step forward to have Harry printed on the most environmentally friendly paper that it can be.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for Scholastic, Ms. Kyle Good commented:
I think the fans who know Scholastic and the people who buy from Scholastic understand that we are an environmentally concerned company and we don't endanger forests ever with the paper we use.
Some larger publishers in the U.S. are concerned about the lack of forest-friendly paper as well as the cost and quality of the paper. Ms. Rowling's agent, Neil Blair from the Christopher Little Literary Agency said the author would not comment on the matter.

The books are already printed, so why would someone go through all of the trouble to go order one from Canada? It seems easier to just go up to the nearest department store or bookstore and buy a copy of the American Editon!!!

I wouldn't mind, I think, ordering from Canada but I reserved mine locally. It would be nice if it were printed on recycled paper - perhaps the paperbacks will be. Scholastic does say they use environmentaly friendly paper though exactly what that means I'm not sure.

I totally agree that we need to save the trres and our air. People just don't get that TREES KEEP US ALIVE! It's sad news to hear that Scholastic is not taking responsible action here, and I'm sure Jo (If she knew) would do something about it, she already donates 99% of the proceeds from her "Fantastic Beasts" and "Quidditch Through the Ages" to Comic Relief. She's a humanitarian. I hope she speaks up, her voice is powerful.

Oh please. Don't people have a life. It is amazing how some people have nothing else to do. Although recycled paper is good, there is nothing wrong with new paper that is prepared specifically from trees grown for the prupose. Also, for longevity, it is likely that new paper will last longer - something important for first editions.

It's always good to try to protect the enviroment, but sometimes people go too far. Wouldn't it be better to focus on getting the publishers to print on the recycled paper instead of trying to have people spend more money. Most people I know will go the cheaper route if it is available. A lot of us are on budgets and even a couple of dollars can be a big deal. I agree with everyone else though...they are a bit late coming out with this.

Well, having read through the end of the article for a definition of "environmentally friendly paper", Scholastic seems to be very reasonable. There is a percentage of recycled paper, altho they don't saw how much in the paper they are using as well as not using paper from old forests. That sounds like a good effort to me.
Here's to the paperbacks on recycled paper!

I don't know if I fully believe them), there are theories out there that recycling paper harms the environment more (because of the machinery, factories, transportation, etc to make it) so since the books are already made and the fact that they should have started this campaign last year, I think this is pretty ignorable.

Ok maybe it's not printed on the most enviromentally friendly paper, but it's not printed on the least friend paper, GET A GRIP! Why do the whine, they'll do nothing but maybe anger a few fans by harrassing them because they bought the book, maybe landing one of them in jail. Don't get me wrong i beilive in kyoto(nature, basicly(an uncommon defenition, yet a strong one)) but nothing can keep me from Potter, KYOTO NOW!

I have already ordered my book and it is a shame this was not reported earlier so more people could decide, I agree with Lupin'smoon they are focusing on the wrong thing. It would be great if the books could be printed on paper from sustainable (right word?) forests or recycled paper but most companies or to bothered with the cost of doing so.

Oh come on! Get a life! Who really cares?! This world isnt going to be here for that much longer so i dont even see the point of it! i think that its great that theres recycled paper involved or whatever 'save the tree's' but it should be the buyers decision of what type they wanna buy.....

I agree... they should have complained about this awhile ago... not 8 days before the release!!! :) How many preorders did they expect to go out... They must really have underestimated us!!! What are we at now... 750,000 just from B&N alone??? :) DEFINITELY late... And if I am correct, wasn't there a HUGE increase in the first run printing of this book???

Wow, that sounded awful of me... I don't mean it badly or anything, but I know that I spilt some tea on my copy of fantastic beasts, and it got COMPLETELY ruined, cos the paper was so absorbant. I'm going camping the weekend it comes out, and thelast thing I want is my book soaked with muddy water. Still, I have great admiration for Greenpeace, and I am generally environmentally friendly. I think that as long as we recycle the paper we don't want anymore, we are helping. x

First of all, it's too late (I mean there is only 8 days till the book goes on sale) because i have already pre-ordered the book. Secondly, I have pre-ordered the british version (It looks much better). And thirdly, I don't care what kind of paper the book is made of, the most important thing is that i get it on July 16th and enjoy reading it. However i have to say that i would have considered buying the "enviromental" version if i hadn't already had an placed order.
