In a brief interview to discuss
his new movie opening this week, The Constant Gardener, Ralph Fiennes discusses not knowing any thing about Harry Potter and how he got into his evil character.
So you've been cast as Lord Voldemort. Are you a Harry Potter fan? I can't claim to be a Harry Potter fan, certainly before. Now, I guess I'm in the family a bit. But I didn't know much about who he was, so I had to do my research…. I wasn't really familiar with the whole world of Harry Potter. But I'm now very familiar with Lord Voldemort because [in low, evil voice] I am Lord Voldemort.
How do you prepare for a character that's pure evil? It's the hardest thing in the world to play pure, pure evil. I still don't know what it is.
Did you study other evil characters? We just talked about different levels of psychotic madness in people when you don't quite know what someone's gonna do. They could do anything -- they could slash your throat, they could put their arm around you and offer to be your best friend, and the next thing you know they turn really nasty. That sort of terrifying thing you see and read about.

Its nice to know that he didnt try to play the part without researching the part and learning the character. he may not of beena fan but as soon as he sees how many people are waiting for this movie, he will most likey beocme that large fan that we all are here on HPANA~

I believe that Fiennes will be a superbly evil Voldemort. However I always pictured Christopher Walken as Voldemort when reading the books, bur I'm sure that Fiennes will do is usually remarkable acting in this film.

This article had some interesting points. It actually might be better that Ralph Fiennes wasn't a fan before; gives him an original point of view. Great actors can do amazing things. I was really impressed how different Jason Isaacs was as Lucius, Hook and Mr. Darling (in Peter Pan).
Ralph will be terrific.
A side note, The great British composer Ralph Vaugh Williams is another Rafe.

(don't know if this has been said yet, however...) If anyone has seen the movie Red Dragon (the prequel to Silence of the Lambs), Ralph Fiennes was extremely good as the psychotic bad guy in that film! I think he will be brilliant as Voldemort...he plays psychotic well. :)

Hey- all the people that keep saying "Oh my gosh, not a HP Fan- how dare he!??!" and stuff like that...if you'd read the article carefully, you'd have seen that he wasn't an HP fan BEFORE doing this movie. He'd just never read the books and never been exposed to the HP world. It did not say that he does not like HP. I saw him in Schindler's List and even just based on that performance he's going to make one heck of a Voldemort.
