In a brief interview to discuss
his new movie opening this week, The Constant Gardener, Ralph Fiennes discusses not knowing any thing about Harry Potter and how he got into his evil character.
So you've been cast as Lord Voldemort. Are you a Harry Potter fan? I can't claim to be a Harry Potter fan, certainly before. Now, I guess I'm in the family a bit. But I didn't know much about who he was, so I had to do my research…. I wasn't really familiar with the whole world of Harry Potter. But I'm now very familiar with Lord Voldemort because [in low, evil voice] I am Lord Voldemort.
How do you prepare for a character that's pure evil? It's the hardest thing in the world to play pure, pure evil. I still don't know what it is.
Did you study other evil characters? We just talked about different levels of psychotic madness in people when you don't quite know what someone's gonna do. They could do anything -- they could slash your throat, they could put their arm around you and offer to be your best friend, and the next thing you know they turn really nasty. That sort of terrifying thing you see and read about.

It wouldn't take that long to reasearch the part, but I'm still surprised he didn't know much about it before then. I wonder what makes actors be drawn to roles that they know nothing about?

It should be really intertaining to see him portray LV. I have a feeling he'll do it quite nicely, I can see him acting psycho convincingly. I just hope they don't make him look all computer generated, I'll be kind of dissappointed.

It does sound like that Ralph has done his homework on LV. I do hope he is up to the task of playing pure evil. You couldn't get much more evil than LV, even if you were playing Satan himself.

Well I think he is ok, always that he could said that it's something important. He don't need to be a fan, not for his work, because he live only for be an actor. I suposs he is going to be a really terrorific person in the movie, because when I see the movie, I don't think if the persons who plays the character is a really fan, I know that the answer could be no.

Ralph seems like a good actor. I havent seen any of his films, but i hope that he plays Voldemort good. I really hope that when im in the movie theatre, watching GoF that his acting will take my breath away, as if i was reading the scene Voldemort is in, at the end of Goblet of Fire again :D, because Voldemort is evil and has to be scary hahaha.

Well that sounds kind of cool actually. Most of the actors in the Harry Potter movies weren't actually fans before they started playing the roles. And so far, its worked out really well!! I can't wait to see how he did in this role!! I wish November 18th would hurry up and get here!!!

Ralph looks very much like voldemort- or at least how I imagined him. I only hope that he does play the evil role properly, and that they give him more snake-like features(possibly red eyes or something just to add to that look.)

I think it is better to have actors that are not huge fans, then they tend to put too much of their own spin on something or they focus on what they think is more important. Mr. Ralph Fiennes is known for playing some dark, dark roles, I am sure he will do exceptionally well in this one.
