In a brief interview to discuss
his new movie opening this week, The Constant Gardener, Ralph Fiennes
discusses not knowing any thing about Harry Potter and how he got into his evil character.
So you've been cast as Lord Voldemort. Are you a Harry Potter fan? I can't claim to be a Harry Potter fan, certainly before. Now, I guess I'm in the family a bit. But I didn't know much about who he was, so I had to do my research…. I wasn't really familiar with the whole world of Harry Potter. But I'm now very familiar with Lord Voldemort because [in low, evil voice] I am Lord Voldemort.
How do you prepare for a character that's pure evil? It's the hardest thing in the world to play pure, pure evil. I still don't know what it is.
Did you study other evil characters? We just talked about different levels of psychotic madness in people when you don't quite know what someone's gonna do. They could do anything -- they could slash your throat, they could put their arm around you and offer to be your best friend, and the next thing you know they turn really nasty. That sort of terrifying thing you see and read about.

Well it's nice to know he is trying to get to know his character. I can't believe he didnt know much about him though. I mean it's such a big thing. Oh well, he was good in Maid in Manhattan so he'll probably be good in this. Though he wasn't pure evil in that movie... ~Paige

I'm very curious about his performance, he's a very talented actor, I love his films. It must be very difficult to play Lord Voldemort, but I'm sure his done a great job.

I surely do hope they don't release a picture of Voldemort before the release of the movie.

I don't really care if he's a HP fan, I just hope for the world that he's a decent Voldemort!

I think Ralph Fiennes will be fantastic as Lord Voldemort. He is an amazingly talented and versatile actor. Anyone who has seen Schindler's List will know that he can play a twisted, cruel, evil character with finesse.
Sure, he may not have been a Harry Potter fan before but, as he said, he's done his homework now, and that's what counts.
Besides (I just can't resist), Voldemort is not supposed to be a fan of Harry Potter ;-)

Ralph Fiennes is by far one of the best actors capable of playing he-who-must-not-be-named. Did everyone see him in Red Dragon. He played a very convincing role as a serial killer. Perfect background for such a sinister character.

First thing I thought of after reading the article was the low voice thing and how Voldemort was supposed to have a high, cold voice. But I really like Fiennes' other work so I think he will do great.

He'll be such a great Voldemort!! It's so funny though how he really knew nothing about the books because, as I understand it every british actor is trying to get there way into the HP films knowing full well whats behind it (besides the fame and fan base). And what evil characters would he have to study? He was a Nazi and Hannibal Lectur's apprentice - I think he has evil down.

From what I've heard, he does a splendid job a playing Lord Voldemort, but I find it hard to believe that you could play such a crucial role in the movies and not even read the books. C'mon man! Just read them!

I think he will do a great job. I've seen some of his other films and I really liked them. But isn't he a bit young to be playing Voldemort. I mean, he should be like 70 right?
