JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books, has updated
her web site with a warning to all her fans about the fraudulent number of autographed & unauthorised items that have appeared for sale on eBay.
From the update:
A recent perusal of the e-Bay stocks of 'signed' Harry Potter merchandise was quite alarming for the person who allegedly signed these stacks of books, posters and even, in one case, an unauthorised biography that I would never, and have never, put my signature to. As far as I could tell on the day I dropped in, only one of the signatures on offer appeared genuine. There seem to be a lot of people out there trying to con Harry Potter fans. The same is true in respect to the huge number of unauthorised Harry Potter e-Books and audio digital files that users of e-Bay have offered for sale to Harry Potter fans.
I would be delighted if the online community of Harry Potter fans canvassed e-Bay directly, asking that they be protected against this exploitation.

Anyone who is a diehard Harry Potter fan would know that stuff is fake, because she's mentioned that she rarely ever signs books. Still, it's despicable that people would try to scam others like that.

Some of these people would do anything just to sell a signed Harry Potter book and if forging JK's signature is the only way, they will do it!

Well that's ebay for you.... I don't generally buy stuff like that anyway, but if there was someone's autograph I wanted that badly, I would want to get it in person. Ebay is okay for other stuff, but you really have to be careful. People scam so many ways there. My mother bought a poster there for a gift and it seemed like a real deal, only like 50 cents, and then she finds out that they want 25 dollars for shipping when the actuall shipping was only 2 dollars. UGH!

Yeah, I dont think I would ever buy one of those "autographed" books off ebay.
I would actually want to meet J.K. Rowling and have her sign it.
Even if it was her actual signiture on the book, I would want to be there.
Thats the whole piont of having it autographed.
Its just not as fun!

I'm glad that JKR is saying something about this. There are so many gullible people out there that may only listen to her saying that the merchandise is not authentic. We should not take anything from online autioneers as cannon....ever.

JKR doesn't sign many things, does she? So if you see alot of items suddenly up for sale, that would be a warning sign right there. I would never sell something like that, anyway. I would want to keep it.

Jerks. It's one thing to sell $5 pirated copies of crappy movies on the streets of New York City, but it's a whole other thing to sell things with fake signatures on ebay where they could sell for tons of money. I'm really happy that she warned everyone because there are tons of people out there that could be stupid enough (me included! hahah!) to think that they're real signatures...

Also, it's not ebay that is selling it! people just sell things on ebay, it's not like whoever is in charge of ebay is purpously selling fake stuff. they have nothing to do with it! it's just stupid people who think they can make a ton of money by selling fake stuff. you don't need to blame ebay! blame the stupid people!

Yes. "Signed" copies. Oh really. You shouldn't be fooled you know. And what's the use of it if, yes it's been signed, but getting an autograph isn't complete without seeing that person herself...so I would never buy that...
