JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books, has updated
her web site with a warning to all her fans about the fraudulent number of autographed & unauthorised items that have appeared for sale on eBay.
From the update:
A recent perusal of the e-Bay stocks of 'signed' Harry Potter merchandise was quite alarming for the person who allegedly signed these stacks of books, posters and even, in one case, an unauthorised biography that I would never, and have never, put my signature to. As far as I could tell on the day I dropped in, only one of the signatures on offer appeared genuine. There seem to be a lot of people out there trying to con Harry Potter fans. The same is true in respect to the huge number of unauthorised Harry Potter e-Books and audio digital files that users of e-Bay have offered for sale to Harry Potter fans.
I would be delighted if the online community of Harry Potter fans canvassed e-Bay directly, asking that they be protected against this exploitation.

Yes. "Signed" copies. Oh really. You shouldn't be fooled you know. And what's the use of it if, yes it's been signed, but getting an autograph isn't complete without seeing that person herself...so I would never buy that...

I wouldn't have bought anything on ebay that claimed to have been signed by Jo, as it is obvious that there will be so many fakes.
I would be interested in first editions though.
Definately Ebay should close down these fakers, who are ruining Ebay's name too.

It is so wrong when people try to tell people that they have her signature, when it is not, and then they sell it. It makes me so mad! Anyway, I'm glad she is letting the world know about this ...

Millions are stolen each year due to pirating. It is hard enough for artist, singers, songwriters, singers , writers as well actors to make a living let alone having someone come along and steal from them.
Tougher laws are needed without infringing on the normal consumers rights.

Of course, JKR has a vested interest in protecting her franchise. I had kind of hoped that she might use her clout to call for some kind of systemic action, though, rather than warn her fans. Certainly she might get behind some sort of consumer-watchdog organization? As should we, as fans of HP and--in my case--people interested in intellectual copyright.

Thats so mean and rude to fradulent list an item as "signed" or "authentic" when its not. I mean these are items not just for adults but for kids and hurting kids like that is uncalled for. Ebay has a lot of fraud problems and I doubt they care but it never hurts to try.

If I ever fo anything signed by jk I would n ever sell it. I would be very weary about buying anything online, but I wonder how they can be sure that is actually is real and not a fake?

The reason that so many people claim to have JK's autograph is probably some type of forgery. I don't get why people do these kinds of thing just to make money. I personally would not trust anything coming from eBAY.

Why people are so mean?? Why they do staff like that?? It is so bad. I don´t buy anything on e-Bay. That is good, that J.K.Rowling is warning us, her fans. Now we know, that if you are buying signatured copy in e-Bay, you probably won´t get the orginal signature. Bad people, eho do that.
