JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books, has updated
her web site with a warning to all her fans about the fraudulent number of autographed & unauthorised items that have appeared for sale on eBay.
From the update:
A recent perusal of the e-Bay stocks of 'signed' Harry Potter merchandise was quite alarming for the person who allegedly signed these stacks of books, posters and even, in one case, an unauthorised biography that I would never, and have never, put my signature to. As far as I could tell on the day I dropped in, only one of the signatures on offer appeared genuine. There seem to be a lot of people out there trying to con Harry Potter fans. The same is true in respect to the huge number of unauthorised Harry Potter e-Books and audio digital files that users of e-Bay have offered for sale to Harry Potter fans.
I would be delighted if the online community of Harry Potter fans canvassed e-Bay directly, asking that they be protected against this exploitation.

How pathetic those people are. Who in the Dark Lord's name would want to waste their time on conning others like that. They must think we're dumb, but I for one would never buy anything signed from e-bay because I know that there is a 90% chance that the signature is fake.
Anyway, it's more special if you get it signed yourself instead of buying it from someone else. That was sweet of JKR to warn us of it I think we should do what she said and write to e-bay explaining what's happening. They must put a stop to it.

You have to be careful with ebay. I have gotten some good stuff, but my husband just bought a DVD on there, it was burned and illegal. I wouldn't even think about getting anything like that on ebay.

Yeah, it's cool that JK is warning us all, not that I'm idiotic enough to believe that it would be their real signature, because who would want to sell something like that...honestly!
Peace!

Those people are so mean. A lot of people would give their entire life savings to have her autograph. I guess its not as good as a personal one to yourself.

Thats a very unfair way of making lots and lots of money. Stupid people like that shouldnt be taking advantage of other stupid people who believe it to be authentic.
But manufacturer mistakes are ok.. My copy of POA has a section of the book repeated, like page 85-101.

Good for her for sticking up for her books and John Hancock. But I guess that's sort of her duty. Kudos to those at ebay that have gotten away with it, but you won't get me.
