Fiennes portrays Voldemort as realistic and frightening Popular (11821)

According to Mike Newell, director of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Ralph Fiennes was castopens in new window as Voldemort because he has the ability to play the character as a realistic and frightening villain and not as a simple caricature.

According to Newell:

You have to have the actor to do it. And Ralph was the actor to do it, because Ralph doesn't chew the scenery, and he isn't a sort of 19th-century melodrama figure. He's absolutely real and cold and chilling and absolutely dedicated to doing bad. And as soon as you have that, you can do it.

Newell and Fiennes had to ask some simply questions about Voldemort's motivation:

What does he want? Why does he want to come back? What sort of a person is he that he wants to come back? What sort of a person is it who wants to impose a reign of evil? Does somebody who wants to impose a reign of evil actually see that it's evil? Or is it in fact for them a kind of good? So there was a lot of that stuff, which is the sort of thing that you discuss with an actor when he's getting to really concentrate on the part. And that was all very, very profitable.

Newell also gives his reasoning as to why he hasn’t yet read Half-Blood Prince.

I'm sure he's done a wonderful job playing Voldemort. A few months ago I was listening to the soundtrack for the movie "The Prince of Egypt" and was suprised to find that he plays Rameses! Of course then I couldn't stop snickering and thinking "hee, hee that's Voldemort singing!" :-)

I think Ralph will do a fin job as Voldemort. He is a wonderful actor and has a lot of range. I hate it when article writers don't have their facts straight. HBP is the sixth book not the seventh. I don't know why but that really angers me. I also am not partial to the fact the WB encourages the directors of the Harry Potter films to look at the movie as a "one off" film. It allows them to be able to cut important information. If the films are a part of a series then, they should be consistent and set up the necessary information in the next film. I guess I'm still upset about the fact that Maraurder's backstory was left out completely in POA.

I swear to God I thought that it was a joke when everyone said that actor ask themselves "What's my motivation?"

I so didn't believe it.

Anyway, in answer to one of those questions, I think evil is in the eye of the beholder. What one person thinks is evil, another will think is good. It's a bit like politics in that sense. I'm on this side of the fence and you're on the other so you're evil.

Very interesting. Also very hard to do in that we did not really know what Voldemort's motivations were until HBP came out (and we still don't really know them). I will be interested to see how it turns out.

They really put a lot of thought into Voldemort's character. I'm sooooo glad that Ralph Fiennes is going to do to the part. I think he's an amazing actor who can play really creepy characters (Red Dragon for example). They made a good choice casting him as Voldemort.

I can't wait to see Goblet of Fire! I'm sure that Ralph Fiennes did an excellent job portraying Voldemort. I can't say I can recall seeing him in a lot of movies myself, but from what I've seen it looks like his performance in GOF should be terrific.

I'm glad Voldemort hasn't become a "caricature". I haven't seen any of Ralph Finnes movies, but he sure looks scary in that bit from the trailer! If he terrifies me, I'll be happy. :-)

And it's funny how Mike Newell hasn't got to read HBP yet ... because he's working on GoF! 56 days left!!
