According to Mike Newell, director of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Ralph Fiennes was cast
as Voldemort because he has the ability to play the character as a realistic and frightening villain and not as a simple caricature.
According to Newell:
You have to have the actor to do it. And Ralph was the actor to do it, because Ralph doesn't chew the scenery, and he isn't a sort of 19th-century melodrama figure. He's absolutely real and cold and chilling and absolutely dedicated to doing bad. And as soon as you have that, you can do it.
Newell and Fiennes had to ask some simply questions about Voldemort's motivation:
What does he want? Why does he want to come back? What sort of a person is he that he wants to come back? What sort of a person is it who wants to impose a reign of evil? Does somebody who wants to impose a reign of evil actually see that it's evil? Or is it in fact for them a kind of good? So there was a lot of that stuff, which is the sort of thing that you discuss with an actor when he's getting to really concentrate on the part. And that was all very, very profitable.
Newell also gives his reasoning as to why he hasn’t yet read Half-Blood Prince.

I hope he plays Voldemort well. If he doesn't, then his whole character is ruined. I hope he plays it evil enough. I bet he will.

I very much agree with Mike Newell about Ralph Fiennes's ability to play characters that are "real and cold and chilling and absolutely dedicated to doing bad." I think he's going to make a fabulous Voldemort, and here's to hoping I'm not going to be disappointed. :-)

Well, I'm sure the Ralph Fiennes will do a fine job. And I'd hope that JKR was allowed to give some deeper insight into the character's motivation, etc. since she's the one who created him! Hopefully, she would be able to prevent them from making some stupid error or leap in judgement.
As for Mike Newell's comment on the Half Blood Prince being, "another huge, wacky novel, and, simply, I've been busy,". Wow, that's a really not a comment someone involved with this franchise should make. How can anyone call any of the HP books "huge" or "wacky"??? Not good press, in my opinion. Sounds like he really doesn't understand HP.

Sounds like Fiennes is going to do a great job. I've only seen him in Maid in Manhattan(as far as I'm concerned) but that's pretty easy compared to Voldemort. I hope he does really good.

I really REALLY hope Ralph does a good job because I think that the overall mood of Goblet could possibly be hinging on exactly how evil, scary, and sinister Lord Voldemort is. It will also most likely set the tone of fear for the rest of the series.
