A canadian folk group, The Wyrd Sisters, is suing Warner Brothers
, Pulp's Jarvis Cocker and Radiohead's Phil Selway and Johnny Greenwood for trademark infringement on use of their band name in the upcoming film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
The all-female band was made aware of Warner Brothers' intent on using the name back in June when they were offered $5,000 (and later $50,000) for use of their name. Warner Brothers and representatives of the musicians have later reiterated that the name will not be used in the movie. However:
Baryluk's lawyer, Kimbery-Townley Smith, says ...the damage has already been done — people already associate The Wyrd Sisters with Harry Potter.
"If you go on the 'net now
and put in Harry Potter and Wyrd Sisters you get 6,000 hits or something crazy like that. People know already and that's because up until recently Warner had them credited and the official word was that the name of the band was The Wyrd Sisters. They've already created an association between the name and the band and that's all you need."
Fans of the books, were already aware that the actual name of the group was in fact Weird Sisters
.

If the book spelled it as "wyrd" then they do have something to sue about. I think it's good publicity and take advantage of it because people will be curious about them and see if they like the group. Opposing warner bros might get them some money but personally I'd take advantage of the fact that the names are similar and make our group known.

That is so guy. They knew the bands name was the Wyrd Sisters so why get mad if you already know. I think they are doing it because they want more money. They are gonig to make the film look bad anyway because the band is not even going to be mentioned. That is so GAY!!! I think that they should be thrown out of the movie and someone else should take thier part since they dont like the name. If yuo dont like the name then dont do it. Its not that hard is it. GAY WADS!!!

It's a name, nothing else, and if they did want to sue, they could have sued JK because Goblet of Fire the book came out years ago.

Ooh poor things. I feel so sorry for them. They don't know what they're getting into. They're turning millions of people against themselves. Just because Wyrd and Weird sound alike, doesn't mean they're the same.

I guess it's really true; that people sue for any reason. In this case, I think the real reason is for publicity. Maybe it's just me, but I've never heard of them. So, this lawsuit seems like a very good way to gain attention.

Who are the Wyrd Sisters anyway ? I honestly can't see what they're complaining about; They were offered money plus this is giving them free publicity. I know I had never heard of thembefore this - and I'm Canadian!

That's just ridiculous! How could they sue? They could get so much out of this themselves...they're just after the money I suppose!
Besides, the real name of the band is "The Weird Sisters" so let Harry Potter and WB have what has been rightfully used and created by JK Rowling.

This is so pathetically asinine, I don't even know how to respond. It is sad to know that this "band" has to resort to such cheap publicity in order to get the name out there. Maybe they should try developing their talents instead?

It is spelled totally diffrent. Get a clue and it's not like WB came up with the name J.K. did. And my goodness if a writer has to research every little thing they want to putin thier books there would be nothing much to put in the books due to copy right infringments!

Ok, that is stupid. The official name is Weird Sisters and they shouldn't be able to sue Warner Brothers if they used the correct name. Maybe this means that Warner Brothers didn't use the right name...

Somehow I think the Wyrd Sisters would have go unknown even without the so-called Harry Potter connection. If anything, I'm sure the group would have more attention drawn to themselves because of the HP connection.
How ridiculous.
On a positive note: I adore Pulp and Jarvis Cocker and am quite excited to hear the music they come up with for the film. And I'm also quite curious about how they'll appear dressed as wizards. :D
