The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has given
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire a 12A rating in the UK. The rating means that children under 12 can go and see it but only if they are with a parent or guardian. According to the BBFC the rating was given because the movie is "scarier and darker" than the others.
In an interview with CBBC Newsround, Helen Pang of the BBFC discusses
the process in deciding the ratings and the reason why GoF received the rating it did:
The latest Harry Potter film is much darker and scarier than the previous three, which were all classified PG (Parental Guidance, suitable for people aged around 8 or older).
So Examiners decided that the 12A was the most suitable category, as younger or more sensitive viewers could be frightened by some of the more intense scenes (which I can't reveal as you'd get upset with me!).
The ending was a shock too, although maybe if you have read the books, you'll be expecting it anyway.
At 12A, we allow moderate level violence, but without focus on injuries or blood. We also allow scenes of threat and horror, but only if there is little 'gore'.
The UK rating seems similar to the one in the U.S., which was released
back in August.

Wow, 12A. This movie is going to be amazing. It is also good that they gave it a high rating because it will give an older audience a chance to watch it...more adults will watch it I mean.

I've never been fine with the ratings idea. I mean, imagine if the next movies will have a very high age limit. All the young fans will be devastated.

Im finding this rating thing a bit confusing. In canada PG-12 is equavalent to PG, is that correct? Can anybody tell me what the rating will be here in Canada? or do we not know? I wish there would just be a north american movie rating system. It would make life a lot easier.

That is about the same rating as it is here, which I am glad. They should not leave any of the darker parts out of the movies in my opinion.

I knew it! Well...here in America we have PG-13 but it's basically the same thing...I knew that would be the rating...I even bet my science teacher (5 bucks richer) I'm kind-of glad though...It's not exactly a kids book-but it's not entirely adult...

I think some people are worried that if GoF is a PG-13 that the 6th and 7th book will be worse. I doubt this is the case, though, because they'd lose a lot of their fan base if they made the rating 'R'. I think that with the right director and producer they can easily make the remaining books appropriate for a PG-13 audience. Then again I don't really think that HBP is really all that much worse in content than GoF and OotP anyway and I doubt, unless Jo really surprises me, that the remaining book will be totally inapprorpiate fora mature, but young audience. These aren't children's books really any more, but neither are they really adult books.
