Last month we told you
all about a Canadian folk group, The Wyrd Sisters, who were suing Warner Brothers and the group who will be playing the band during the Yule Ball scene in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It would now seem that they have secured
a November 4th court day to apply for an injunction barring distribution of the film in Canada.
The lawsuit against Warner Bros., Jarvis Cocker from Pulp and Jonny Greenwood and Phil Selway of Radiohead alleges that the group in the film appears under their groups name but according to Warner Bros. there is no mention of the group’s name in the movie.
According to Warner Bros. spokesperson, Scott Rowe:
There is absolutely no name . . . for the band that is playing. They are never identified by name. We have (also) submitted sworn affidavits to the court, stating that the name Wyrd Sisters is not being used either in the film or on its soundtrack.
Warner Bros. even flew to Canada to show a copy of the movie to prove that the name Wyrd Sisters was not mentioned.
As soon as we hear more on this matter we will let you know, especially for our Canadian Harry Potter fans.

I have said it before and I will say it again, it won't happen. Canada's entertainment revenues have been extremely low lately and they have been looking forward to movies like Harry Potter to increase our crappy movie sales. Also, Canada will severally suffer (again revenue wise, but also in reputation) if 80% of canadians cross the border just to see Harry Potter. Honestly guys, it won't happen...so just sit back, relax and enjoy "The wyrd sisters" making themselves the laughing stock of the Canada, and the rest of the world.

I love the Harry Potter book series and all the wonderful movies that are coming along with it. I would hate to see anything/anyone stop the film release in Canada. I understand these days that litigious actions are often frivolous, lacking good reason and asking for a huge sum of money.
However, I can't help but play Devils Advocate. Put yourself in this band's shoes. You work hard for over a decade establishing a name for yourself. You have a small, but dedicated group of fans. And all of the sudden a giant, much much bigger than yourself, comes along and takes a little something from you. You obviously can't help it, and you can either fight it, or back down? What would you do?
I think it's great that Warner Brothers has thought this through, and has decided to protect the culture "The Wyrd Sisters" has built around themselves, by not using their name in the movie. (Even if it "just" closely resembles the Canadian Band's name)
Yes, it'll be different not hearing "The Weird Sisters" in the movie, but I'm much more excited about other aspects of the movie than that.

This group is being so stupid!!! There so called name "Wyrd Sisters" is not the same as it is in the book, "Weird Sisters" get it through your tiny heads! Im not usually mean but come on people, they even tried to pay you at first and you bite back! To tell you the truth I was hoping to see the name of the band in the movie, a bit disappointing, and it is almost your fault entirely!!! Sorry, had to get that out! I hope they don't ruin it for you Canadian fans!!! If it were me I would be very, very upset right now!

I haven't really understood this whole thing anyways. The movies are based upon the book, which was written in England quite a few years ago, and the name in the book is the Weird sisters, different name. tHis is just stupid.

I'm sorry ForgottenThings, but I have to disagree. They didn't think up that name for themselves, it's Shakespeare, so really it's not theirs. Warner Bros. doesn't use the name in the film because when they originally aproached the Wyrd Sisters, they said no. WB is not doing it to "protect the culture The Wyrd Sisters has built around themselves", they did it so they wouldn't be sued. After they got the no-go from Wyrd Sisters they decided not to use the name in the movie, and most likely told the band that. But the Wyrd Sisters don't care they want the money and the publicity. Besides, if they really want to be suing someone they should try JK Rowling, since she's the one who wrote about a band called the Weird Sisters (after MacBeth). And now they're releasing a CD and going on tour? All Canadian HP fans: make sure to trash their concerts!

Hey, hosers of the "Wyrd Sisters," if you would have read the books (which you must have since the name is not mentioned in the movie), then you would have known about it. Try suing the book publishers or something. Good job making yourselves look like jerks, for a little publicity.

They are pretty stupid because they didn't think of the name anyway - it was Shakespeare in MacBeth. If this is true, I hope people boycott the Wyrd Sisters for stupidity and claiming what Shakespeare said as theirs originally.

The idiocy is that these people think that they deserve something for nothing and fortunately there are rules about filing a false claim as well as not receiving any rewards for failing to sign up when given the chance. People need to learn that nothing in life is free. everything has a price and this suit is going to cost the countless of future fans.

i am so so sick of hearing about these fools! I can't believe WB's actually stopped using the name 'weird sisters'.....they are apparently worried about being associated with HP.....i don't understand why...they are alienating a legion of fans and what about Canadian fans they already have that want to see GOF....if i lived in Canada i'd be mighty PO'd they were even trying to ban it, but rest easy Canada...There is no way it will be banned!

What a cheap shot to get their names in the news. What are they doing ...taking Rita Skeeter lessons?
The GoF Book came out years ago, with the Weird Sisters as the band...why didn't they complain then?
No! let's wait for the movie to make a bigger stink in the press.
