Last month we told you
all about a Canadian folk group, The Wyrd Sisters, who were suing Warner Brothers and the group who will be playing the band during the Yule Ball scene in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It would now seem that they have secured
a November 4th court day to apply for an injunction barring distribution of the film in Canada.
The lawsuit against Warner Bros., Jarvis Cocker from Pulp and Jonny Greenwood and Phil Selway of Radiohead alleges that the group in the film appears under their groups name but according to Warner Bros. there is no mention of the group’s name in the movie.
According to Warner Bros. spokesperson, Scott Rowe:
There is absolutely no name . . . for the band that is playing. They are never identified by name. We have (also) submitted sworn affidavits to the court, stating that the name Wyrd Sisters is not being used either in the film or on its soundtrack.
Warner Bros. even flew to Canada to show a copy of the movie to prove that the name Wyrd Sisters was not mentioned.
As soon as we hear more on this matter we will let you know, especially for our Canadian Harry Potter fans.

There is famous song here in the states that was part of one of the wierdest movies I have ever seen.... BLAME CANADA...in the South Park movie. Anyway, I don't even think it is spelled the same in the HP books. Even if it is which one came first...Maybe WB can go after them for copy the weird sisters from HP.

I swear people sue for the dumbest reasons. If they were smart they would profit off this and not go to court. They could get some free publicity if they used their heads here

Come on man! That's not fair. They can not ban the movie in Canada. Anyway people are going to watch it, they can get the DVD or something shipped in. But I really want to watch the novie at the theater. They can't do it anyway. Besides, the name is spelt different.
I'm sure nothign will happen, but it still worries me a little the something bad might.
I really can't wait for this movie, and it would be a shame if it were to be postponed or something because of this little problem.

I just do not understand why they are making such a huge deal about this. THey should just let it go. But the good thing is, the name was never mentioned in neither the movie or the soundtrack. So they cannot sue, right? I am not sure whether they can for that or not.

I think that Canada isn't full of nuts because all the nuts from wherever in the world move here to the US.
I think that they were just wanting to get a sneak peek at the movie.
Talk about ticking off a lot of HP fans though. I wouldn't ever listen to any of that groups music now just on principle.

That's rediculous, especially since the actual name 'Wyrd Sisters' is never used in the movie OR on the soundtrack.

It WILL be interesting to hear the court's opinion of the lawsuit. I'm quite sure that we'll hear the results of the court date within hours if not minutes.
I think that we all agree that WB will prevail in this case but let's keep a couple of things in mind:
1. The matter of spelling doesn't matter at all here since the band name is not used in any way in either the film or the soundtrack. If the name Weird Sisters was used then we could argue spelling.
2. WB will prevail, not because it is a multi-billion dollar corporation but because the suit is completely without merit. Non of the parties involved have used the name Weird Sisters in any way or at any time past the planning stages. At that time the Wyrd Sisters said no to WB's offer.
I think that all of you Canadian HP fans can rest easy, really. I just can't see any possibility of the case lasting beyond the initial court date. I will probably be dismissed on that date.
