Last month we told you
all about a Canadian folk group, The Wyrd Sisters, who were suing Warner Brothers and the group who will be playing the band during the Yule Ball scene in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It would now seem that they have secured
a November 4th court day to apply for an injunction barring distribution of the film in Canada.
The lawsuit against Warner Bros., Jarvis Cocker from Pulp and Jonny Greenwood and Phil Selway of Radiohead alleges that the group in the film appears under their groups name but according to Warner Bros. there is no mention of the group’s name in the movie.
According to Warner Bros. spokesperson, Scott Rowe:
There is absolutely no name . . . for the band that is playing. They are never identified by name. We have (also) submitted sworn affidavits to the court, stating that the name Wyrd Sisters is not being used either in the film or on its soundtrack.
Warner Bros. even flew to Canada to show a copy of the movie to prove that the name Wyrd Sisters was not mentioned.
As soon as we hear more on this matter we will let you know, especially for our Canadian Harry Potter fans.

My God!!!
The things that people would do for media attention!
It's incredible!! And even of the name of the band were to appear in the movie, everyone would know that it is 'Wierd Sisters'. If they took time to read the book they would know!
They're just egonistic snobs!

This is really getting ridiculous. If they ever managed to block the distribution of the movie, they would most certainly end up losing fans by doing so. It's really selfish of the Wyrd Sisters to try to ruin this for so many fans, and I hope that they realize that before it's too late to salvage their reputation.

I can't believe why they would want to sue them. It's not they're fault that those people are picky, little stubborn freaks. I'm guessing that the Wyrd Sisters are really weird, because they just don't understand the needs of Harry Potter. Sorry for all of you up in Canada!!:{

If they did somehow did stop the viewing of GoF in Canada that would really suck because I live in Canada.
But it looks like WB have the upper hand.

It's morons like these waco sisters that make me embarassed to be a Canadian. This is the biggest greed scam I've ever heard of! They are some stupid folk group (based out of Manitoba) that no one pays any attention to. Hopefully WB won't bow to their greedy demands. They are not mentioned in the movie, they are not spelled the same..they are not even in the same galaxy! I am truly embarassed that this is spawned from our great country!

This is so stupid! This stupid band is trying to sue WB's? Don't have a chance. Plus, it seems if they are worried about the name in the movie...how come I haven't heard any complaing about their similar name in JK's book? They know they would be crushed in an instant if they tried to go after JK.

I don't get these people. I sure as hell hope that the Wyrd Sisters aren't looking to build a Canadian fan base; because if they are, they have a funny way of going about it.

Holy cow this is the stupidest arguement ever... They have no right to try and stop GoF in all of Canada just because of a stupid band name that isn't even mentioned. Watch, now they'll start trying to sue JK.
But what if they do stop GoF in Canada? I live in Canada! I would go crazy and move to the U.S. side of Niagra Falls.

I think that's kind of stupid. It's not even the "Wyrd Sisters." Plus, why are they suing Warner Bros. when the name isn't even mentioned-especially if they flew to Canada to show them a copy. Does anyone know if they tried to sue JKR for actually using their name in the book? Also, I don't really understand why this is bad for them. Won't they just get more recognition because all the Canadian Harry Potter fans will make the connection? Plus that would really really stink if the didn't show GoF in Canada. All those Canadian HP fans without a movie- how tragic! I'm anxious to see the outcome of this.

Oh, HOW CAN THEY NOT REALISE HOW STUPID THIS ISSUE IS??????????!?!?!?!?!?!?!
IT'S "WEIRD SISTERS" IN J.K.ROWLING'S BOOK, JUST LIKE IN SHAKESPEARE'S, NOT "WYRD"!!!!!!!!!! --and WB can use the name without having to fly to Canada to justify anything, and just tell those morons to sue Shakespeare!!!

I cannot imagine WB losing this one. They looked into these issues before ever starting filming, I'm sure. Besides, it doesn't hurt the film in any way to not mention the band's name. We all know the band is supposed to be the Weird Sisters, so there's no need. And it's always a bit clunky adding a line like "Oh, cool, the Weird Sisters are performing" into the dialogue anyway. I hate when they do that on TV shows. Totally unnecessary. Cool for the book, not necessary in the movie.

Not this again. They should just leave it alone. The two groups are not the same, and that's that. They shouldn't be allowed to do this. They are going to get some revolt from HP fans in Canada.

I feel sorry for all the HP fans in Canada. That group is ruining the film for them. They might not even get to see it, unless they cross the U.S. border. This is fidiculous, their name isn't even in the movie or the book. It's spelled differently. They are taking things way out of porportion.

Yay! The Wyrd sisters aren't Australians!
How come they didn't sue this?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0159931/
How about this?
In Macbeth, the three witches are sometimes called the weird sisters, e.g. act 2, scene 1: (Banquo) "I dreamt last night of the three weird sisters [...]"; or act 4, scene 1: (Macbeth) "Saw you the weird sisters?" (Lennox) "No, my lord."
But there's a bit more to it than just the Macbeth reference. 'Wyrd' is the Norse concept of destiny or fate, as embodied by the Norns (who probably inspired the Witches in Macbeth). Since 'weird' to a modern reader just means 'strange', it's easy to miss the overtones of the title and just assume that it's an Old spelling of 'weird'.
The spellings are different for one.
Poor Canadian Harry Potter fans.

They're going to lose there's no question about it. They have absolutely no basis for thier claim, especially if the name is never mentioned in the movie. It's know solely by the fans who have read the books. If I saw them in person I'd tell them to try the lottery they'd have better luck and I'd take a broom and shove it...Bunch of jerks!

C'mon folks, isn't it obvious?!
The Wyrd Sisters are acting so unreasonable in this sitution that there is only one possible explanation for their behavior.
Warner Brothers *PAID* them to stir up trouble with a frivolous lawsuit knowing they would lose. Warner Brothers are the ones benefiting from the publicity, cementing the loyalty of the HP followers and improving their public image!
